UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
` BENJAMIN A LAX. ROGERS, OF MALDEN, MISSOURI.
FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 342,308, dated May 18, 1886.
Application tiled February 6, 1886. Serial No. 191,038. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN ALAX. ROG- ERs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Malden, in the county of Dunklin and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fences; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de seription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.
The special object of the invention is to make a portable paling fence which may be quickly taken down and rapidly set up, the same being at the smallest expense consistent with the strength that will be required for its purpose.
Figure l of the drawings is a perspective view; Fig. 2, aview in elevation ofthe crossstakes; Fig. 3, a detail view of the hanger, and Fig. 4 a similar view of the anchor.
In the drawings, A represents a barbed wire of any preferred diameter, consisting of two or more strands of wire suitably barbed. I secure this wire at each end to an anchor, F, driven into the ground. I may use a rope or any other flexible iuaterial,wl1ich is carried over a prop or support or brace, D, at cach end of the line and down to another anchor. It is also supported at intervals by the supports E, which may consist of two stakes crossing at the upper endsy or there cut diagonally and brought together to form a V-shaped channel-for the wire or rope. They may be fastened together by a ring, band, or in any other manner.
B is the paling, which may be of any preferred form. They are connected by a wire near the top and one near the bottom, the same being wrapped or tied at intervals; or there may be two wires near top and bottom, made to cross between the adjacent palings. The rail-wires B' B are provided with a hook,
b, at one end and an eye, b', at the other, so
that the panels may be connected, as shown in Fig. l of the drawings. Each panel is provided on the top rail with two or more hinged hooks, G, to catch over the wire A, which is made taut. The panels being thus connected audsuspended, I use fastening drivehooks F, to hold them at the bottom and preventthem from lateral displacement by wind or any other cause. It will thus be seen that this fence can be readily taken apart, so as to be easily handled or transported from place to place.
That I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
The hereiirdescribed fence-panel, consisting of the palings secured together by horizontal wires provided with hooks at one and eyes at the other end of the panel, the hooks G G, attached to the top wire, the inclined supports D, the crossed stakes E E, and the superposed wire A, the latter passing over the supports and stakes and secured at the ends, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BENJ. ALAX. ROGERS.
XVitnesses:
J. l). STEWART, W. T. DEMENT.
