Description

(No Model.)
SQ LEFFLER. FENCE POST.
No. 533,959. Patented Feb. 12, 1895.
UNITED STATES" PATENT OFFICE.
SOLOMON LEFFLER, OF STEWARDSON, ILLINOIS.
FENCE-POST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 533,959, dated February 12,1895.
I Application filed October 4, 1894. Serial No. 524,850- (No model.)
- exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, refermade of burned clay, terra-cotta or like sub-- stance which is not subject to decay from long exposure, providing in connection with the post convenient and serviceable means for securely attaching the fence wires or rails.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain, the same consists in the novel form of the post and in the fence wire securing means used in connection therewith, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and then'specifically defined in the appended claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which drawings- .Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fence post embodying my invention, a portion of the post being broken away, in order to better illustrate the means employed in securing the longitudinal wires or rails of the fence. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail of a portion of the post, with wires attached thereto.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designatesthe post,
{which is cylindrical in form, as shown in the present instance, though it is at onceevident that the same may be rectangular, or of any openings-B which openings are arranged in a line extending in the direction of the length of the post, and the openings are arranged at distances apart corresponding with the distances apart at which it may be desired to place the longitudinal wires or rails which are to be attached to the post, in constructing the fence.
' G is a heavy wire or rod, which is passed through the hollow interior of the post and has its ends bent'fldown over the ends of the post, as shown at O.
D, D are short pieces of heavy wire, which are passed through the openings B in the post and are at their longitudinal centers bent around the wire 0, and the free ends of the wires are extended upon the outer face of the post, wherethey serve to engage the longitudinal fence wires, around which they are twisted, as shown inFig. 2 of the drawings.
It is at once evident that a fence post such as I have described will be cheap of construction, and durable, and the means which I employ for-attaching the fence wires to the post will be at all times available, and will securely retain the longitudinal fence wires in place, without liability of their being from any cause accidentally detached.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As an improved article of manufacture a fence post having in combination witha hollow cylindrical post provided with a series of apertures B, a vertically disposed rod 0, carried within the post'and adjacent to the said apertures and having its upper and lower ends bent, respectively, over the upper and lower edges of the said post, and the loop wires D designed to holdthe wires of a fence to the said vertical rod, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two'witnesses.
