SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 348,035, dated August 2.4, 1886.

Application filed November 7, 1885. Serial No. F2144.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ORLANDO MosELEY, of Peru, in the county of Miami and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Method of Bracing Combined Vire-and-Picket Fences; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which forms part of this specification.

My invention has relation to fences, more especially such as are known as combination wire-and-picket fences, although it relates in a general way to all wire fences and all fences having upright suspended pickets; and it has for its object to furnish fences of this general class with an improved wire brace, applied in a novel manner, and which will always tend to hold ythe fence rigid, whether. it passes over level ground or ground which rises or falls in 011e or more directions.

With these objects in view my invention consists in the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of devices, which I shall now proceed to fully describe, and after ward speciiically point out in the claim appended hereto.

ln fences of this description much trouble has been experienced on account of the tendency of the pickets to swag, especially in the combined wire-and-picket fence in which the pickets are suspended by pairs of continuous twisted wires or by such wires as shown in the drawing, and hereinafter referred to, owing to the stretching of the wire, which causes 011e suspending-line to become longer or shorter than the other. Attempts have been made to remedy this by connecting a brace to the post and to the middle of the panel; but these have not been wholly successful. My invention is in the nature of an improvement upon these.

In the accompanying drawing I illustrate a panel of fence embodying my invention.

Referring to the drawing by letter, A are the pickets, B the suspending-wires, and C O the posts of a panel. The wires may be twisted around the pickets or strung through perforations in them.

The suspending-wires are secured to the posts by staples or in any other suitable or well-known manner. After the fence has been -erected I take an ordinary (or if I so desire a barbed) wire and secure it in any suitable manner, as by staples, to the post at E, and

carry it thence to the center of the panel, as

E, then secure it to the wire or the picket, and thence bring it up again to E on the other post. This would brace lthe' central portion of the panel and prevent its falling or swagging in a perpendicular line; but the stability of the fence between the center and the posts would depend upon the length of the panel. In

order, however, to brace all parts ofthe fence,

to near the top of the center of the panel, and

thence to the bottom or near the bottom of the next post, after which it is pulled lout of line and secured, as before stated. A fence secured by both upward and downward bowed braces will be almost as stiff as a rigid or solid board fence.

` Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is*

A fence consisting of posts, pickets, and suspending-wires, by which the pickets are supported, provided with a brace secured at or near the bottom of the center of the panel and tops of two adjacent posts, and bent out of line and there secured, and also with a brace secured at or near the top of the panel and bottoms of the posts, and similarly bent out of line and secured, as set forth.
