WASHBDARD. No. 582,122. I Patented May 4, 1897.

WASHBOARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 582,122, dated May 4, 1897.
Application filed June 27, 1896. Serial No. 597,119. (No model.)
To a whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, ISAAC II. GASTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vashboard Attachments, of which the following is a speoifica tion.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in clamps for washboards, and has for its object to provide a device of this description which shall be simple in construction, easily applied, and when in use will effectually prevent the riding up of a washboard, and which is capable of adj ustment to varying depths of tubs, and which will also permit of the adjustment of the washboard to varying angles within a tub.
With these ends in View my invention 0011- sists in the details of construction and combination of elements herein after set forth, and then specifically designated by the claim.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction and operation in detail, referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective of a washboard with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a section of a modification.
Referring to the drawings in detail, G represents a rod having its ends turned at right angles thereto and the feet II formed thereon, by means of which said rod is secured to the back of the washboard A by the screws or bolts I. J is an elongated collar adapted to slide upon this red and having pivoted thereto at K the spring-fork L, the prongs of which are adapted to engage with the upper edge of a tub, and the collar may be adjusted at any position upon the rod by means of the setscrew M. By this arrangement it will be seen that the board may be adjusted at any angle within the tub by simply adjusting the collar upon the rod and also that the board maybe adapted to tubs of varying depths by this adjustment.
Another form of my improvement is embodied in the construction shown in Fig. 2, and consists of the collar N, which is shorter than the collar J, and a set-screw O, threaded therethrough, to which the spring-fork P is pivoted at Q. Thus the collar may be adjusted without an additional set-screw by utilizing the spring-fork as a lever for turning the set-screw O.
Other slight modifications might be made without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I therefore do not wish to be limited to the exact construction here shown.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is- In combination with a Washboard, a rod secured thereto, a collar adapted to slide and be adjusted upon said rod, a screw for holding said collar in adjustment, and a springfork pivoted to said collar, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ISAAO H. GASTON.
