UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CORNELIUS HOOD, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
WASH-BOARD RUBBER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,834, dated March 16. 1886.
Application filed December 29, 1884. Serial No. 151,446. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CORNELIUS Hoon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in IVash-Board Rubbers, of which the following is a specification, to wit:
This invention relates to an improvementin wash-board rubbers; and it consists in certain peculiarities of the construction and operation of the same, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed todescribe its construction and operation, referring V to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of my invention applied to a wash-board. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of one end of the same, partly in section; and Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the rubber.
A represents a wash-board, of any desired form, to which my invention is attached.
B represents two fluted rollers, made of rubber, wood, or any other suitable material, journaled in suitable castings, B, and provided with arollinghandle,b,asshown. One of the castings B is formed with an arm, B which is hinged to swing vertically in a head, O, provided with a shank, O, swiveled in the head D of a clamp, D, shaped to clasp the side of the wash-board, and provided with a screw, (Z, for clamping the device firmly to the board. This, as will be seen, gives both a vertical and horizontal swing to the rollers, and the shank C is also of sufficient length to allow of its sliding vertically to accommodate the varying thickness of the clothes under operation. This rubber is clamped to the board at anyconvenient point, and it will be seen that it has in use a circular motion about the pivotal shank C, which during a large part of the time brings the fluted rollers across the board at an angle with its corrugations, as in Fig. 1, and thereby is much more effective than it otherwise would be.
The swivel-joint rises and falls freely to compensate for the thickness of the goods to be rubbed and keep the rollers level, while when not in use the rubber is turned back out of the way upon its hinged arm, as will be evident.
To aid in giving proper pressure to the rubber and draw it down upon the wash-board, I provide the shank O with a spring, D as shown in Fig. 2.
v Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a wash-board rubber, the combination, with the rubber, of a clamp adapted to clasp the edge of the board and secured to the rubber by a swivel-joint, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a wash-board rubber,a frame provided with two fluted rollers and having an arm projecting from one end, in combination with a head in which this arm is hinged, having a shank swiveled in a clamp adapted to be secured upon the edge of the board, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The frame B, fluted rollers B, handle I), and projecting arm B, in combination with a head, 0, in which the arm is hinged, formed with a shank swiveled in and sliding vertically through the clamp D D, and the spring D" upon said shank, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CORNELIUS HOOD.
