UNITED rates WASHBOARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 585,005, dated June 22, 1897. Application filed September 15, 1896. Serial No. 605,928. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT PRICE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Holly, in the county of Burlington and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washboard-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in washboard-holders, and has for its object to provide a device of this description by means of which a washboard may be securely held within a'tub without liability of riding upward when its surface is being used for the ordinary purposes, and also to permit the securing of the board to the edge of the tub when either side thereof is used.
With this end in view this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth, and then specifically designated by the claim.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, the construction and operation will now be described in detail, referring to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a section of a tub illustrating the manner of applying my improvement to a board and the manner of using the same in connection with a tub; Fig. 2, a perspective of a washboard having my improvement applied thereto; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 00 m of Fig. 2, the bar 0 being reversed.
In carrying out this invention I provide a washboard of any desired construction with a bracket A upon each side rail thereof, and extend the top rail, as indicated at B, and between these extensions and the brackets are pivoted the rods C, which may be of any suitable material, preferably hard wood.
A series of pegs D are set within the rods at such an angle as to form spaces adapted to fit over the upper edge oft-he tub, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, and these spaces are preferably three in number for use in connection with the three standard sizes of tubs in general use.
Since the rods 0 are pivoted it will be seen that they may be turned upon their axes and thereby permit the use of either side of the board while allowing the pegs to act in conjunction with the edge of the tub to clamp the board against riding upward.
The principal advantage of my improvement is that a washboard may be supplied therein at but little increased cost, since it is entirely formed of wood and the only added parts are the brackets, rods, and pegs, all of which are of a design readily produced by machinery; and another advantage of this improvement is that when the board is out of use the pegs may be turned in a direction which will protect them from engagement with surrounding objects and also enable the placing of the board in the same space that it would otherwise occupy were my improvement not attached thereto.
Having thus fully described this invention, what is claimed as new and useful is A washboard having the top rail thereof extended, said rail having sockets formed in the extensions, brackets secured on the side rails, said brackets having sockets formed therein, rods having one end fitted in the socket of the extension and the other end fitted in the socket of the bracket, a series of ALBERT PRICE.
