Description

(No Model.)
T. A. BRISTOW. SECURING 0R FASTENING DEVICE.
Patented Jan. 7,1890.
WIZJVESSES [WEJVTO I UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS A. BRISTOV, OF BLENHEIM, SOUTH CAROLINA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JAMES L. NAPIER AND WVILLIAM B. DRAKE, BOTH OF SAME PLACE.
SECURING OR FASTENING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. d19,029, dated January 7, 1890.
Application filed June 20, 1889.
T0 to whom it may concern.-
Beitknown that I, THOMAS A. Bmsrow, a citizen of the United States, and a resident. of Blenheim, in the county of Marlborough and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Securing or Fastening Devices; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to the improvements in securing or fastening devices, and refers especially to a device for retaining keys in place, such as used in machinery; and the object of the invention is the production of a simple, durable, and inexpensive device of this character which will be thoroughly eflicient for the purpose intended.
\Vith the above objects in view the invention consists in the device constructed substantially as hereinafter illustrated, described, and specifically claimed.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical sectional view of the same.
Referrin gby letter to the drawings, in which similar letters of reference denote corresponding parts in both figures, A designates a crank-shaft, encircling one end of which is the strap of the pitman or driver B, having a slot or passage 0 therein.
The device is shown as applied to a crankshaft for operating the piston of an engine; but it is obvious that it may be employed in any instance where it could be effective.
, D designates a gib of the ordinary construction, having shoulders adapted to engage the faces of the strap and prevent said gib from sliding transversely to the pitman. It also has the slanting edge, against which the slanting edge of the key E is adapted to slide. The narrow end of the gib is provided with a threaded socket, into which the retaining screw H is adapted to pass. By means of this retaining-screw the adjustable and removable yoke F is fixed to the end of the gib. The upper arm of this yoke is also provided with a set-screw G. This set-screw has preferably Serial No. 314,927. (No model.)
a conical point adapted to fit a corresponding socket in the large end of the key E. The screw G is also provided with a set-nut I below the arm of the yoke.
The operation of my device is, briefly stated, as follows: The yoke is attached to the gib by means of the retaining-screw II, and when the key has been driven in as far as desired the screw G is turned down to hold the key as adjusted. To prevent the setscrew G from becoming loose. the set-nut I is screwed up against the lower face of the yokearm. \Vhen it is desired to remove the key, the retaining screw II may be loosened slightly and the yoke swung around out of the way, or it may be entirely removed, as desired. 'When the parts of my device have once been adjusted, the set-nut renders it practically impossible for the parts to get loose and out of place.
It will be seen that my device is perfectly adapted to be used with gibs and keys already in use by simply providing the gib with a threaded socket for the insertion of the retaining-screw.
Another advantage of my invention is that it can be so made as to occupy very little room to adapt it to the confined limits in which it is often desirable to have pitmen and similar parts of machinery operate. By fastening the yoke to the gib itself I do not weaken the strap or pitman by bolt-holes.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination, in a securing or fasten ing device, of the gib D, key 0, yoke F, retaining-screw II, set-screw G, and set-nut I, all constructed and combined to co-operate substantially as described, and adapted to be used in pitman and similar connections, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS A. BRISTOXV.
