NITED STATES PATENT: OFFICE.
EDMUND K. EDWARDS, OF JENNINGS, LOUISIANA.
SHIRT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 577,648, dated February 23, 1897.
Application filed October 23, 1895. Serial No. 566,606- N modem A I To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND K. EDWARDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jennings, in the parish of Oalcasieu and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shirts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,
and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in mens shirts, the object of the improvement being to form a shirt which may be simple in form and in the number of parts, and to add, by reason of the convenience secured by this construction, comfort to the wearer without sacrificing the appearance of the garment.
In the drawings which form a part of this application, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a shirt equipped with my improvements; and Fig. 2 is a View of the bosom, showing a portion of the shirt secured thereto.
Like reference-numerals indicate like parts in the views.
The body of the shirt 1 is constructed with a front opening 2, having on either side equidistant from said opening buttons 3, and on the left-hand side, near the collar, a button 4. On the neckband back of the button lis an eye 5. Secured to the shirt, at the righthand side of the opening 2, at a point where the front of the shirt is united with the neckband, is one-half of the bosom 6, which is also secured at the bottom below the lower end of the opening 2. The left-hand side of the bosom 7 is secured to the shirt only at the bottom 011 a line with the bottom of the right-hand side 6. The under side of the section 7 of the bosom is reinforced by a piece 8, which is provided with suitable buttonholes 9, and on the portion of the neckband secured to said section 7 is a hook 10, which, when the bosom is closed over the shirt, engages the eye 5 on the neckband of the shirt The buttonholes 9 engage the buttons 3 and 4..
The usual stud-holes 11 extend through the sections 6 and 7 of the bosom, and the collarbutton hole 12 is provided, which secures the top of said sections together when the shirt is closed by the wearer. A buttonhole 13 is placed on a piece 14, which is inserted under the section 6 of the bosom, and said buttonhole engages the button 3 on the right-hand side of the shirt-front when the garment is closed.
It will be seen that there are no buttonholes in the shirt-bosom proper, and that it is secured to the shirt by means of the reinforcesections. It will be noted that from the top of the bosom to the bottom thereof the openings between the buttonholes will permit of a free circulation of air, which secures comfort to the wearer. My improved construction also insures ease in ironing the garment, a difficulty which will be appreciated by laundresses. This construction, by which the sides of the shirt are open except where secured by buttons, permits of the use of this portion of the shirt as a sling for the arm if at any time either arm or hand should become crippled. The almost complete separation of the bosom from the shirt-front, except at the top and bottom, prevents the communication of moisture from the shirtto the bosom, and thus retains the stiffness of the latter.
In taking off the garment the wearer need only disengage the hook and eye on the neckband and the button at the top, thus avoiding annoying buttoning and unbuttoning of portions of the garment or the taking out of studs for that purpose.
Having thus described the construction and advantages of myimproved shirt, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an article of manufacture, a shirt comprising a body portion having a central front opening, a bosom composed of two sections centrally divided, one of said sections being secured at its upper and lower ends to the body of the shirt, and the other section being secured at its lower end, and adapted to be detachably secured at its upper end to said shirtbody, reinforces on the inner faces of said EDMUND K. EDWARDS.
