SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 576,824, dated February 9, 1897.

Application filed February 15, 1896. Serial No. 579,361. (No model- To aZZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, IVILLIAM SMITH REY- NOLDS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Greenwich, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and nsefullmprovements in Boole Clamps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to book-clamps, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class by means of which a record-book of any kind or character may be held open at any desired point and the leaves thereof extended, a further object being to provide a book-clamp which is applicable to any book, and which may be applied thereto for the purpose above mentioned.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure l is a plan View of an open book provided with my improvement, and Fig. 2 a side view thereof.

In the practice of my invention I provide a clamp consisting of a rod A, having a flat arm or jaw a, which extends at right angles thereto, and which is provided at the opposite end with a head a and mounted thereon is a clamp B, having a jaw 17, which is provided with a cross-head b and the clamp B is also provided with an extension b which projects in line with the jaw b, and the rod A is passed through the jaw Z7 and the extension b adjacent to the body portion of the clamp, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.

Mounted upon the rod A, between the head a thereof and the extension 19 of the clamp B, is an expansive spiral spring C, and the operation will be readily understood from the a, and the device is applied to the book D in the manner shown in Fig. 1, so that the separate jaws Z) and a cross the central fold thereof and the spring C operates to force the jaw I) in the direction of the jaw a and thus securely hold the book in the position shown.

It is evident that the book D may be opened at any desired point and the clamp applied thereto, as described, and it is also apparent that this device may be applied to any form, kind, or class of a book, and my invention is not limited to the exact form of the bookclamp herein described, and I reserve the right to make all such alterations therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the scope of the invention.

Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 7 The herein-described clamp for books, consisting of a rod A provided atone end with a head 0?, and having the other end bent at right angles, and a sliding clamp B having a head 19 provided with an opening through which the rod A passes, and having an arm b bent at right angles thereto, and provided with an opening adapted to receive the arm A, and a spring mounted upon said arm A between the heads a and b and adapted to force the arm Z) upon the arm a, as set forth.
