UNITED STATES PATENT oEEIcE.
WILLIAM C. BRIDGES, 013 WAPELLO, IOWA.
LOOK FOR SIDE AND BACK COMBS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM C. BRIDGES,-
device, and has for its object the provision of means to prevent a comb from working out of the hair and falling and being lost or broken.
Another object of this invention is to enable a comb to be fastened in the hair with greater convenience.
With these and other objects in view, this invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a rear view of the comb. Fig. 2 is a view looking in the opposite direction of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 33, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the locking means.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates the body of the comb, through which passes a rivet 2. Secured to one end of the rivet 2 is a pivoted hook member 3, which member is substantially semi-circular in form and is provided with an inwardly-extending port-ion 4. The top of the inwardlyextending portion & terminates in an out wardly-extending flanged portion 5, which constitutes a grip, so as to adjust the locking member 3. Between the comb or body portion 1 and the hook portion 3 is positioned a washer 6, which washer acts as Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 13, 1908.

Serial No. 443,254.
a brake for the hook member 3. The washer 6 is provided with a straight lower edge 7, which straight portion is positioned above the teeth of the comb, so as not to come in contact with the hair. To the other end of the rivet is secured a flat spring 8, which acts to normally clamp the hook member 3 against the washer 6, and retard rotary movement of said hook, and hold said hook in an adjusted position. The ends of the spring locking member 8 rest against the body of the comb.
hat I claim is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a comb, a fastener carried thereby, a hair-engaging hook pivotally mounted on one end of said fastener and provided with an outturned integral finger grip, a washer interposed between the hook and the comb for retarding movement of the hook, and a spring for holding said hook in bind ing engagement with the washer.
2. A device of the character described comprising a comb body, a fastener passing therethrough, a hair-engagin hook pivotally mounted upon one end of said fastener and provided with an integral finger hold, a washer on said fastener and interposed between the hook and the body of the comb, and a spring on the other end of the fastener and exerting a pressure against the comb body to hold the hook and washer in binding relation.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM C. BRIDGES.
