COMBINED BOOK MARK AND CLIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 395,473, dated January 1, 1889. Application filed August 24, 1888. Serial Nf283,657. (No model.)
To (all whom it may concern@ Be it known that I, JOSEPH I). BARTLEY, a
citizen of the Un itcd States, residing at Bridgel port, in the county of Fairfielrgl and Stateof Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Book Mark and Clip; and l do hereby declare the :following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled. in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain novel and useful improvements in combined book-marks and devices for holding open. the leaves of books, and has for its object to provide a device of this description which shall be readily adapted 'for use, while at the same time the device may be varied in its functions.
lith these ends in view my invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements, such as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and then specifically designated by the claims.
In the accomlmnyingdrawings, Figure l is a detail elevation of' my improvement; Fig. 2, a side elevation; Fig. 3, a perspective showing my improvement adapted for use in connection with a book of ordinary thickness; Figs. l and 5, perspectives showing my device adapted for use in connection with a book of considerable thickness; Fig. G, a perspective illustrating the application of my improvement as a combined book mark and clip; Fig. 7, a detail modification of my improvement; and Figs. 8 and 9, views illustrating, respectively, a detail of a modied form of clip and the method of applying the same to a book.
Similar letters denote like parts in the several figures.
I preferably make my improvement from a single piece of spring-wire, the middle section whereof is bent Vto form fingers A, while the free ends are bent to form arms B, which eX- tend in the same direction as the said fingers. The cross-wires C, which connect said lingers and arms, are deflected-as seen at a, in order to facilitate the adaptation of the device. For a book of ordinary thickness the clip is pressed into position at the top of the book, the two middle iingers being allowed to pass behind the cover, while the arms B are passed directly in front of the pages to be held open, as shown at Fig. 3. In FigzJc I have shown how my improvement is used. on a thick book, the middle lingers in this instance being inserted between the compact leaves of the book instead of behind the cover. In Fig. 5 one of the fingers is shown inserted between the compact leaves on one side of the open book, while the other :linger extends within the space between the cover-backing and the back of the book, and this exemplifies a very ready manner of using my device in connection with a very thick book. When used as a combined book mark and clip, one of the arms B is inserted between the leaves at that point where reference is desired, while the remaining arm is extended across the opposite face of the open book, as shown at Fig. 6. I would state, in reference to this last-named function of my improvement,` that the fingers maybe placed in any oit' the hereinbefore-described positions relative to the leaves or cover of the book, and also that, it being necessary to a constant reference to anyparticular portion of the book that the body of leaves intervening between the open face of the book and the point of reference should be capable of afreemovement back and forth, my improvement in this respect performsl an lentirely novel function.
Fig. 7 shows a modification in which the middle iingers are soldered to the cross-wire which vconnects the arms B; but I prefer to make my improvement from a single piece of wire, since great economy and nicety of appearance are thereby effected.
The clip shown at Fig. 8 has a single middle finger, A,which is applied behind the book and is adapted to straddle the backing between the covers, so that it will be readily seen 'that the side wires which form this finger perform the same function in maintaining a grasp on the book as the two fingers hereinbefore described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secu re by Letters Patent, is-
l. The herein described book mark and clip made from a single piece of spring-wire, having terminal arms adapted to extend across the opposite faces of an open book, and.
TOO
intermediate Iingers extending1 in the same direction with said arms and connected to the latter by cross-wires, substantially set forth.
2. In a combined book mark and clip, the combination, with the terminal arms and 1ingers extending in the same direction, of crosswires connecting` said arms and fingers, substantially as shown and setl forth.
In a combined book mark and clip, the
combination of the lingers A, the cross-wires C, deflected at c, and the arms B, substan- JOSEPH D. AR'ILEY.
