SUSPENDERS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 571,114, dated November 10, 1896.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HUGO P. GEIsLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Saginaw, in the county of Saginaw and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Underwear (Drawers) Suspenders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in underwear (drawers) suspenders, to be worn as part of the apparel of I 5 men; and the invention consists of the peculiar construction, arrangement, and combination of all the various parts, as more fully hereinafter set forth.

Figure 1 is a front view of my device and shows it in its entirety. Fig. 2 is a front view of my device and shows it as worn or attached to the drawers and pants-suspender.

In the construction of my device, as shown in Fig. I, A is a woven, knitted, or cloth web cut at the proper angle, as shown, to cause thedraft from any point to center at the button D.

B is an elastic web.

0 is a suitable clasp so constructed as to be adjustable upon the web A and the elastic web B, with means for engaging with the top of the drawers, as shown in Fig. 2. D is a button placed centrally upon web A to engage with buttonholes a a a for the purpose of attaching the suspender with the pants-suspender and as a means of adjusting the same as to length.

In mens apparel the underwear (drawers) are often worn without suspenders of any kind, while others have an attachment to their pants-suspenders which engages with the top of the drawers by means of clasps of 5 different kinds; and my invention relates to improvements in this part of the apparel of men.

\Vith the ordinary methods the drawers are either not carried by any suspender at all or are carried by one dependent from the pantssuspender, which engages with the front onethird of the drawers, leaving the back two-' thirds of the drawers without any support of any kind, and by reason of the weight of the drawers being upon the suspenders, as above, it causes the waistband of the drawers to be worn and torn, thereby damaging the same.

In applying my device to mens apparel (the suspenders being in pairs) we would" begin by engaging the clasps C, as shown in Fig.- 1, with the top of the drawers, as shown in Fig. 2, the web end A nearest the front and near one of the front quarters of the top of the drawers, then fastening the other clasp, being the one on the elastic web B, to the top of the drawers, as shown in Fig. 2, near one of the back quarters of the drawers, then passing the upper end of the web A through the ring or clasp of the pants-suspender G, fastening the same by engaging the buttonhole a with the button D, as shown in Fig. 2. We would then place the other suspender upon the other side of the drawers in the same manner, thereby giving the drawers an equal support from the four points or quarters. 75.

The buttonholes a a a provide means for adjusting the suspender as to length to fit diiferent wearers.

With my device attached as above described, with the elastic web end attached to the back quarters of the drawers, the elastic web reaching back over the hips, by reason of its being elastic, it provides means for adjusting itself to the form of the wearer in any position he may assume, and thereby equalizing the weight and strain at all times.

It is evident that my device could be made from elastic web entirely without departing from the spirit of my invention.

I do not claim the clasps O, as shown, they 0 being the subject-matter of another patent; neither do I bind myself to this particular clasp, as any of the common clasps now in use will answer for my device.

What I claim as my invention is 5 1. The combination of the two straps provided with clasps at their ends for attachment to an undergarment, one of said straps provided with an integral upper extension having suitable adjusting devices for attachment to a I oo suspender, the other strap being elastic, substantially as described.

2. The combination of the straps A and B provided with clasps, the strap A having an upper extension provided with a series of buttonholes and having a button near the center thereof whereby the device may be adjustablyattaehed to a portion of a Suspender, substantially as described.
