UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL G. HOLMER, OF BROCKTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
NU RS ERY-GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 569,642, dated October 20, 1896.
Application filed June 11,1896. Serial No. 595,133. We model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL O. Ilonnnn, a subject of the King of Sweden and Norway, residing at Brockton, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in. Nursery-Gates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in gates, the objectof the same being to provide a simple and convenient device for closing the doorways in houses to prevent the passage of children therethrough.
The invention consists of two parallel horizontal bars located across the doorway, connected by metallic strips which are secured at one end to one of said bars and which have a sliding connection with the other of said bars by means of an elongated slot in said strip, a bolt passing through said uprights having a thumb-screw upon its outer end, and a series of ribs pivoted to said bolt and adapted to be thrown outwardly thereon, their movement being limited by the engagement of pins on each of said ribs with the shoulders of slots or recesses in the rib next adjacent thereto.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my device in its operative position. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same in closed position. Fig. 3 is an end view. Fig. 4 is a section through the pivotal bolt. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of one of the ribs, showing the pin and the slot or recess therein.
Like reference-numerals indicate like parts in the difierent views.
The two horizontal bars 1 1, of which my gate is made up, are located across the doorway, and are connected by means of strips of metal 2, which are secured to one of said bars and provided in their opposite ends with elongated slots 3, through which pass screws or bolts in the other of said bars. Also connecting the bars 1 l at a point between the strips 2 2 is a bolt 4:, having a thumb-screw'o upon its outer end. Pivotally connected to the bolt 4 and located between the bars 1 1 are aseries of ribs 6 6, each formed with a slot or recess 7 in one side and with a pin 8 on the opposite side, which is adapted to engage the shoulder in the slot of the rib next adjacent thereto for the purpose of limiting the movements of said ribs. The slots in the two ribs next to the bars 1 1 are engaged by pins projecting inwardly from said bars.
In using my device when it is desired to close the doorway the ribs 6 6 are thrown to their outward positions, as shown in Fig. 1, and clamped in such positions by tightening the thumb-screw 5 on the end of the bolt 4, which forces the two bars 1 1 and the interposed ribs in close contact one with the other. If it is desired to pass through the doorway, the thumb-screw 5 is loosened and the ribs 6 6 thrown up out of the way.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isj 1. The herein-described gate, made up of a pair of bars extending transversely of a doorway, a bolt passing through said bars, a series of ribs pivoted to said bolt, and means for clamping said ribs in any desired position, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A gate made up of a pair of bars extending transversely of a doorway, a plate secured to one of said bars and slidingly connected with the other, a bolt passing through said bars, a thumb-screw upon the outer end of said bolt, and a series of ribs pivoted to said bolt, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. A gate made up of a pair of bars extending transversely of a doorway, plates connecting said bars, each of said plates being secured at one end to one of said bars and formed with a slot at its other end through which a screw or bolt in the other of said bars passes, a bolt passing through said bars, 9 5
