P. E. SLOAN.
NEWSPAPER FILES. No.179,82z. Patented July 11, v1es7e.
iUNITED STATES PATENT OEETGE.
P. ELMENDOEF sLoAN, or sYEAoUsE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN NEWSPAPER-FILES.
Speciication forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,822, dated July 1l, 1876; application liled June 3, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
-Be it known that I, PETER ELMENDORE SLOAN, of Syracuse, Onondaga county, State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Newspaper-Files, of which the following is a specication The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a paper-ijle for newpa-pers and the like iu joints, so as to be readily read, while being held in hand, by doubling up in a way to bring any part of a large paper within easy range of the eyes without inconvenience to the reader.
The construction is as follows, referring to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure lis a side or profile View. Fig. 2 is a perspective view with the joints turned out of line.
The same references are used in both iigures.
I employ three (more or less) pieces, A B C, the ends of which I prefer to have sufficiently broad to forni a steadyjoint, that, while it readily allows the parts to swingaround and double onto each other, holds them in the same plane, or nearly so. The parts may be united by any convenient hinge or lacing (two forms being shown at a and b) that will give to the parts flexibility. At the outer ends a plate or bar ot' metal, or other suitable material, D E, is aftxed, ruiming parallel with the bars,`at a distancetherefrom sufficient to introduce the papers between them.
When two, three, or more bars are used, the center ones, F, are jointed, rby means of rings e or other suitable device, to the plates D E. Screws s pass through each of the plates near their ends, and enter the pieces A B C, into which they screw. There should be a countersink at each of the screw-holes, to facilitate the entrance of thescrews when thrust through the paper, as hereafter described. A ring, r, is attached to each ot' the screws s, through which a rod, G, can be put when the parts are to be held in line.
rIhe paper, when inserted between the plates and pieces A B, is held by the screws, which pass through'it into the countersunlc holes before named. -The iile can be hung up by its rings, either with or without the rod Gr.
Having thus described my improved papertile, I claim as my inventionl. Ajointed paper-tile, made in sections, united by suitable hinges or joints of flexibility, constructed and arrangedsubstautially as and for the purposes herein described.
2. In combination with ajointed paper-tile,
as described, the ring-screws s, as and for the purposes specified.
3. The rod Gr, in combination with thejointed paper-tile, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
P. ELMENDORF SLOAN.
