UNITED STATES PATENT QEEICE.
lVILLIAM ll. FYE, OF CIHCAGO, ILLTNOTS, ASSTGNOR (.)F ONE-HALF TO Cll'ARliEh AVERY, OF SAME PLACE.
SASH-HOLDER.
SPECFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 394,352, dated December 11, 1888.
Application filed September l0, 1888. Serial No. 285,028. (Model.)
To LIZ uf'tom it may con/cern.:
Be it known that l, \\"ILLIA \I ll. FYE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of (look and State of' Illinois, have invented a new and useful Windowrlightenera of which the f'ollown is a specift cation.
My invention relates to eontrivances for tightei'iing windows; and it consists of two narrow metal plates, one to be screwed fast to the stop-bead of? a window-frame, at the edge of' the saine next to the sash, and made with flanges at its edges extending in opposite directions, and a hole somewhat. above its middle point for the passage of' a rivet, the other with a slot made lengthwise for the passage of such-rivet, a flange on its outer edge, and a thuinlrpieee on its broader end. The construction and application of such contriv ance are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure l is an elevation ol a portion of a 'window frame and sash embodying my inven tion. Fig. 2 is a cross-section off the same, taken on. the line l l of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a detail plan section ofi' the same, taken on theline 2 2 of Fig. Fig. al. is vanV edge elevation of my tightenel.' detached. Fig. 5 is a front elevation ofi' the saine. Fig. f5 is a similar view showing the wedge part i'n a lowered position as compared with Fig. 5.
Similar letters refer to si milar parts throughout the severa-l views.
In the drawings, A is a plate screwed fast to the stop-bead C next to the sash C. 1t is made with the flanges A and A2 at its edges, extending at right angles to the plate, but in opposite directions. The edges of. the plate make a small angle to each other. The flange A passes between the stop-li)ead and the sash, and thus aids the screws (ly in holding the plate firmly in position.
B isa rivet passing' through the plates A and D, but leaving a space between its head and said plates snfiicient to permit the plate D to be received therein with room enough to move freely.
D is a wedge-shaped plate made to fit tightly between the flange A2 and the sash C. This plate is made with the flange A3. extending at right-angles from the edge next the sash. and Y curved slightly inward at its extremitv next to the narrower end of the plate. The edge of' the plate next to the flange A2 is in a straght line throughout its entire length. This flange is designed to prevent the plate from wearing a groove in the sash and to aid in holding the sash firm when tightened. The plate D has a slot, D, ruiming' lengthwise parallel with the flange A2 when the sash is tightened by the action off the plate. Through this slot the rivet B passes, the slot bein made of such width as to permit the plate D to slide up and down. At its lower end the plate D is provided with a thumlrpieee, D2. The plates are seeured to the stop-bead C a little distance below the middle rail, c, so that the lower sash, C, when pressed by the plate D,\vill force the upper sash, ("2, against the window-box, and thus both sashes be tightened. The plates are placed with their narrower ends upward, and a pair off plates is secured to cach stopbead.
The manner of. using the tightener is obvions. The plates being secured, as above indicated, the thumb and finger are applied to the piece l)2 and the plate D is fforeed up ward. Owing to its wedge-like shape, it will, as `it moves, press the lower sash more and more tigl'ltl)` against the upper sash, and that against the win low-box, and thus tighten both without absolutelvv locking them.
My invention is not intended to be a window-fastener-neither lock nor suppmt. It
designed to tighten windows, so as to prevent rattling and to shut out dust, noise, smoke, cold air, the., and to secure sash against moving when weights and windows are not perf'ectlgv balanced.
ll'aving nowdescribed in v invention, whatl elaim as new, and desire lo secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
ln a sash-securer, the combinationof the base-plate A, with its flange A2 at right angles to the plane ol' the same, the plate lf), with its flange A3, with slot l)3 parallel to the flange A2, and thun'llrpiece D2, and the rivet- B, secured .in the plate A, all substantially as set forth.
lVILLIAM H. FYE. lVitnesses:
E. C. CRMvFoRD, W. C. CORLIES.
