SASH HOLDER.
No. 390,878. Patented Oct. 9, 1888.
UNITED STATES PAT NT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM MATHEWS, OF ALAMEDA, CALIFORNIA.
SASH-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part Qf-LetteIs Patent No. 390,878, dated October 9, 1888.
Application filed July 17, 1888.
Serial No. 280.196. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, VVILLIAM MATHEWS, of Alameda,Alameda county, State ofOalifornia, have invented an Improvement in VVindow- Locks; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to a device for locking windows in any position, either open or closed; and it consists of a double-inclined plane fulcrumed within a case upon the top of the lower sash and having a cylinder supported within it, so as to bind against the upper sash and lock the two in any desired position. The segment is adjustable by a set-screw.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing one side of the window with my attachment. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken through the upper and lower sashes, showing the application of my device. Fig. 3 shows the double-inclined plane and the roller separate.
A is the upper and B is the lower sash of the window, fitted into the casing so as to slide up and down in the usual manner.
D is a small box fixed upon the top of the lower sash, near one side, and having a movable piece, E, fulcrumed inside of it, as shown. The piece E has a pin, F, passing through its lower part and into the sides of the case D. An adjustable screw passes through the outer side of the case D and the point presses upon the back of the piece E, so that by turning the screw G this upper end may be pressed inward or allowed to fall outward at will.
H is a roller lying within the double-inclined plane E, so that when the upper end of this piece is thrown forward the roller H, resting upon the inclined plane of the lower portion of E, will be pressed against the upper sash whenever any attempt is made to lower this sash or raise the lower one, thus binding the two firmly and preventing their being moved.
When it is desired to allow the sashes to move freely, the set-screw G is turned backward, thus allowing the double-inclined plane to fall backward, releasing the upper sash from the pressure of the roller, and allowing it to be moved up and down freely. When thrown forward, it will serve as a lock to prevent the sashes from being moved. This locking ac tion does not depend upon the pressure of the screw, but upon the binding action of the roller between the upper sash and the inclined plane.
Having thus described my in vention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the upper and lower sashes, of the case D, secured to the lower sash, a double-inclined plane pivoted within said case, aset-screw for adjusting the inclined plane, and a roller between said inclined plane and upper sash, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
\VILLIAM MATHEW'S.
