REUBEN W. HYERS, OF PLATTSMOUTH, NEBRASKA.
DOOR-STOl.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 770,642, dated September 20, 1904.
Application filed April 14, 1904.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, REUBEN W. HYERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plattsmouth, in the county of Cass and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Door- Stop, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of doorstops which are secured to the door for engagement with the floor to hold the door open at any desired extent, and has for its object to simplify and improve the construction of devices of this character and produce an easily-applied device which may be operated entirely with the foot and which will effectually hold the door at any desired point.
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described, and specified in the claims.
In the drawings illustrative of the invention, in which corresponding parts are denoted by like designating characters, Figure 1 is a front elevation. Fig. 2 is. a sectional side elevation of the device applied to a portion of a door. Fig. 3 shows perspective views of some of the parts disconnected.
The improved device consists of a baseplate 10, preferably provided with a guiderib 11 and secured to the door, a portion of which is represented at 13 by two screws 14: 15, which also serve as studs to guide a bolt 16, having a longitudinal slot 17 engaged by the stud-screws.
The bolt 16 is provided with intermediate spaced shoulders 18 19, between which a cam 20 operates, the cam being pivoted upon the upper screw-stud M, as shown.
The base-plate is provided with acurved rib 12, the face of which is disposed in the same plane as that of the rib 11, the two ribs serving as bearing-surfaces against which the inner face of the cam 20 rides, and is thus prevented from rocking on its pivot.
In the lower end of bolt 16 a socket 21 is formed for a roller 22. of rubber or other similar preferably flexible material, the sides of the socket having horizontal slots 23, in which the axle or journal 24 of the roller operates to provide a lateral movement com- Serial No. 203,175. (No model.)
bined with a rotary movement to the roller relative to the bar.
Connecting the studs 14 exteriorly of the bar and cam is a guard-plate 25, having a longitudinal slot 26 for engagement with the studs, the function of the guard being to hold the cam in cooperative relation with the shoulders 18 and 19that is to say, to prevent the cam from moving laterally away from the bolt.
The cam is provided with spaced stops 27 28 to alternately engage opposite sides of the guard as the cam is thrown into itsupper or lower positions to limit the movements and prevent undue movement thereto, and the stop 27 will be extended laterally, as shown, to provide a foot-rest for the operator, so that the cam may be thrown by the foot when required.
The base-plate 10 will be connected to the door at or near the lower edge, preferably near its free swinging edge, in position to cause the roller 22 to be tightly compressed upon the floor (represented at 29) when the cam 20 is thrown into its downward position, and then when the cam is thrown into its upward position the roller will be elevated free from the floor and release the door. By this simple arrangement when the door has been swung to the desired point a slight downward and lateral pressure by the foot in one direction upon the stud or stop 27 will rotate the cam and cause it to bear upon the shoulders 19 and throw the bolt 16 downward and forcibly compress the yieldable roller 22 against the floor and effectually lock the door fast. and any attempt to move the door will.
merely cause the journals of the roller to roll in its slotted bearings 23 and wedge the roller against the plate 10.
By entirely reversing the position of the cam or rotating it until the stop 28 engages the guard 25 the bolt will be retained in its elevated and inoperative position and likewise hold the bar 16 in its elevated and inoperative position and free from the floor, so that the attachment will not interfere with the usual operations of the door.
1 metal, and may be polished, plated, or otherwise ornamented or coated.
By this arrangement it will be noted that a simply-constructed, strong, and easily-applied between the shoulders.
and operated device is produced which may be attached to any door and some forms of swinging windows and will efiectually hold them at any desired open position.
In the foregoing description is shown the approved form of construction; but I do not wish to be limited thereto, as changes and modifications may be made in minor details without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages, and I reserve the right to such changes and modifications as may fall within the scope of the claims.
Having thus is claimed is 1. A door-stop comprising a base-plate having laterally-extending studs, a bolt having a slot to be engaged by the studs and provided with spaced shoulders, and a cam operating described the invention, what 2. A door-stop comprising a base-plate provided with lateral studs, a longitudinally-slotted bolt to be engaged by the studs, said bolt being provided with spaced shoulders and with a yieldable locking element, a cam having its periphery disposed to engage the shoulders, and means carried by the cam for limiting its rotation, and for moving the locking element into and out of operative position.
3. A door-stop comprising abase-plate, lateral studs carried thereby, a longitudinallyslotted bolt through which the studs project, said bolt being provided with spaced shoulders and with a yield-ing locking element, a cam pivoted upon one of the studs and having its periphery disposed between the shoulders, and a guard held in position by the studs and disposed on the outer face of the cam.
4:. A door-stop comprising a base-plate provided with ribs having their faces in alinement, studs carried by the plate, a bolt provided with a longitudinal slot to be engaged by the studs and carrying at its lower .end a yielding locking element, said bolt being provided at its upper portion with spaced shoulders, a cam pivotally connected with the baseplate by one of the studs and having its periphery disposed between the shoulders, means carried by the cam to efiect its rotation, and a guard held in place by the studs and disposed against the outer face of the cam.
5. A door-stop comprising a base-plate, a longitudinally-slotted bolt provided at its lower end with a rotatable and laterally-movable yielding locking element and at its upper portion with spaced shoulders, a cam disposed between the shoulders, a guard loosely engaging the outer face of the cam, and studs projecting through the guard, cam, and boltslot, and operating to hold the parts of the device assembled.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
REUBEN W. HYERS.
