SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters IPatent No. 569,410, dated October 13, 1896.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GUSTAF L. R. DAHL- BERG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Somerset, in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Easels, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to easels known in the trade as single-wing stands; and it consists of an improved contrivance for the stay by which the wing is held in position for support of the face-plate in use, as hereinafter described, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a rear view in perspectiveof my improved easel with the wing-stay disconnected from the wing. Fig. 2 is a similar view with said wing-stay connected to the wing for holding it in the position for use. A represents the face-plate, and b the wingbrace for supporting the face-plate in position for holding photographs and the like on a shelf or table. The wing-bracehas a margin 0, partly separated from it by the score-line d and being pasted or otherwise secured to the back of the face-plate at the middle or thereabout, as is usual in such devices, for enabling the wing-brace to be folded fiat on the face-plate for packing and to be set out backward to support the face-plate in use.

For securing the wing-brace in its extended position I have produced the stay-hook e from the wing-brace in the form of a verticallyswinging flap, jointed at its lower end to the part c by the score-line f and having the laterally-extended hook-head g on one edge next to the free end, the said edge having the head being coincident with the score-line d, on which the wing-brace b swings. The head portion of the hook-stay is cut from the part b and the rest of the hook from the marginal part c of the wing-brace, and in the part Z) of the wing-brace I have provided the oblique slot h in such relation to the head of the hookstay that when the wing-brace is turned well out toward the position it occupies in use and the hook-stay is turned toward its position in use the head will pass through the slot. From the lower side of the slot 71. is a curved branch slot 2', somewhat narrower than the length of slot h and terminating about in the plane of the joint-line f with a notch eX- tension j at the lower end in the direction of the j oint-line d. The head has the hook proj ections 7a, which, after being inserted through slot h and the head is shifted downward in the branch 1 engage the wing b at the margins of said branch slot and hold the wing against turning back toward the face-plate.

The head of the stay-hook swings down to the bottom of branch 2' of the slot when the wing-brace comes to its position for supporting the face-plate. A slight tendency which the wing-brace has by the resistance of the uncut portion of the score-line to close against the face-plate draws one edge of the hook into notch j, so that the hook is locked in the slot and the wing-brace is thereby effectually secured in position.

I claim 1. The combination in an easel, of the wingbrace comprising the marginal attaching portion and the folding portion jointed to said marginal portion, the Vertically swinging stay-hook jointed by the score-line to the said marginal portion and having the laterallyprojecting hook-head, the oblique slot in the wing adapted for inserting the hook-head through it when the wing and the hook are partly set for use, and the branch slot for complete adjustment and interlocking of the parts substantially as described.

2. The combination in an easel, of the wingbrace comprising the marginal attaching portion and the folding portion jointed to said marginal portion, the vertically swinging stay-hook jointed by the score-line to the marginal portion and having the laterally-projecting hook-head, the oblique slot in the wing adapted for inserting the hook-head through it when the wing and hook are partly set for use, and the branch slot, said slot havingthe notch extension in the direction of the j oint-line d, and adapted for complete adjustment and interlocking of the wing and stay-hook substantially as described.
