Description

no. 752,943. K
UNITED STATES Patented February 23, 1904.
GEORGE H. ALLEN, OF CLINTON, NEW YORK.
PICTURE-FRAME.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 752,943, dated February 23, 1904, Application filed May 1, 1903. Serial No. 155,121. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it muy concern:
Be it lrnown that I, GEORGE H. ALLEN, of Clinton, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picture-Frames; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention,
which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. Y
The object of my invention is to provide a construction of picture-frame which can be cheaply made and is particularly adapted for saleat popular prices and which include inexpensive means for supporting the picture either by hanging or standing.
Figure l of the drawings shows a front view of a picture-frame embodying the features of my invention. Fig. 2 shows a rear View of the same. Fig. 3 shows, on an enlarged scale, a vertical central section. Fig. 4; shows, also on an enlarged scale, ahorizontal cross-section.
Referring to the reference letters and .gures in a more particular description, 1 indicates the main body-board of the pictureframe, whichis preferably of heavy paper or book board, although it may be of wood pieced to form the said body-board. The body-board is provided with an opening 2, cut or formed through the same, forming the picture-opening. Secured to the back of the body-board is the backing-piece 3, which covers the opening 2 through the board on the rear side. The upper edge of the backing-piece 3 is slit vertically, forming a hanging-tab 4, having an eyelet 5 in the upper end thereof. This tab Li is connected at the lower end, but is capable of being swung outwardly from the back atthe upper end more or less and as indicated in Fig. 3. The lower portion of the back 3 is continued down to the line l, which is substantially even with that'of the lower end of the body-board. The back 3 isscored across its width, as indicated at leaving the Yportion 3, which is not secured or cemented to the body-board, adapted to swing outwardly, as shown in Fig. 3, forming a brace or stay for the picture when it is desired to use the same as a standing picture. Through the opening 2 and against the baci; 3 there is first placed the picture 8 on a piece of paper or other suitable material. Over this is placed the glass plate 7, substantially conforming in size to the opening in the body-board. The plate and picture are secured in place by the retaining-strips 6, which are preferably of quarter-round material and are inserted in and form a border for the opening 2 in the body-board. When the picture is used as a hanging picture, the part *L will fold back and lay flat on the back of the picture and not interfere with the picture being suspended. When the picture is used as a standing picture, the tab Li will fold into the opening out of which it is cut and not be objectionable on account of'appearance or otherwise.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A picture-frame consisting of a mainfbodyboard having a picture-opening through the same, a backing-piece secured to the back of the board and covering said opening and eX- tending to the line of the lower edge of the same, and slitted vertically at its upper edge forming a tab by which to hang the picture, and scored transversely at its lower portion forming an outwardly-swinging part adapted to act as a brace, a picture and glass successively placed in said picture-opening against the backing-piece and retaining-strips securing said picture and glass in position, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have aiiixed my signature, in presence of two witnesses, this 22d day of April', 1903.
