DESK-PAD.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 641,894, dated January 23, 1900.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, LOUIS SAINBERG, a citizen of Russia, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Desk-Pads, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in writing-pads for desks, or desk-pads, as they are commonly called; and it consists in the novel features and combinations hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

The usual desk-pad comprises the board backing of a size toreceive the sheets of blotting-paper and having permanently secured at its outer corners leather pieces, beneath which the corners of the blotting-paper are passed and by which said sheets are held upon theboard backing. In accordance with the present invention the permanent leather corner-pieces are dispensed with, and in lieu thereof I have provided removable cornerpieces, comprising, in connection with the leaf or portion which holds the corner of the blotter down on the pad, a metal frame, which passes upon the edges of the pad, and a latch, by which said frame may be automatically locked in position when passed home upon the edges of the pad, as hereinafter explained and claimed. The removable corner-pieces are attachable to and removable from the pads or board backs without injury to either the corner-pieces or the pads, and hence they may be removed from one back and applied to another back whenever desired.

The invention will be fullyunderstood from the detailed description hereinafter presented, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front View of a desk-pad having corner-pieces embodying my invention. Fig. 2is an enlarged view,partly broken away, of one corner of said pad. Fig. 3 is a sectional View of same on the dotted line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a sectional view of same on the dotted line 4 4 of Fig. 2.

In the drawings, A designates the usual board back to receive the sheets of blottingpaper, (not shown,) and B the corner-pieces applied to the corners of the said back A and adapted to retain the sheets of blotting-paper upon said back A. The corner-pieces B are more clearly illustrated in Figs. 2, 3, and at, in which it will be seen that each cornerpiece is provided with the upper triangular section 0, having at its two outer edges the depending flange D and being hinged at its outer corner upon a pin E, whose ends are fastened within the triangular frame F, which constitutes a lower portion or section of the corner-pieces and is U-shaped in cross-section, so as to pass upon the edges of the board back A. The frame F is of metal and fits upon the corner edges of the back A, and at the corner of the frame F is fastened the pin E to receive the arm G, constituting the movable portion of the hinge, and which, as shown in Fig. 3, has its upper horizontal portion fastened to the under side of the hinged section 0. At its lower portion the corner of the frame F is cut away to receive the end of the leaf-spring H,which is in the shape of a tongue pressing against the arm G below the pin E, and is formed integrally with the plate I, fas tened to the lower side of the frame F and extending on a line substantiallyparallel with the pin E. The purpose ofjthe spring H is to exert such pressure upon thearm G that the hinged section 0 may be locked in either its open or closed position, and hence the lower end of the arm G, contacting with said spring H, is flattened, as shown in Fig. 3, whereby said spring H is enabled to hold the section 0 in its closed position to afford resistance to the section 0 during the opening of the latter and to lock said section when in its open position. When the section 0 is in its open position, the outer flat side of the arm G (shown in Fig. 3) will then have reached a horizontal position and will receive the pressure of the spring H. The flanges D at the outer sides of the hinged section 0 will be of suitable depth to afford below the top of the section 0 sufficient space for the reception of the sheets of blotting-paper, and the frame F will be of appropriate size to snugly pass upon the edges of the board back A. I propose to removably attach the frame F, carrying the hinged section 0, to the back A, and hence I provide at the edge of the back A a leaf-springJ and form in one arm of the frame F an elongated opening K, into which the spring J will pass when the frame F is applied to the back A, in order that said spring J may by engaging the edge of the opening K lock the corner-piece upon the back A. Vhen it is desired to remove the corner-pieces B from the back A, the spring J will preliminarily be pressed downward into the recess provided for it in the back A, and thus the spring J will be moved out of engagement with the frame F and the latter may be passed from the back A. The corner-piece B thus com prises the hinged section 0 and the frame F, and the hinged section 0 is a metal plate of suitable size and having at its two outer sides the depending flange D ani provided also with the arm G, constituting the movable portion of the hinge. The frame F is one continuous piece of metal bent to conform to the corner of pad A, and is U-shaped in cross-section, so as to pass upon the edge of said corner, said frame F having the pin E to engage the arm G and the plate I, whose tongue H operates as a spring and is in constant engagement with the arm G below the pin E. The back A is of the usual construction, except that in this instance it is provided adjacent to one edge of each corner with a spring J, operating as a latch to engage the opening Kin the frame F, and thereby locking said frame in a removable manner to said back A.

\Vhen the corner-pieces B are applied to the corners of the back A, the hinged section 0 may be turned upward in order to fully expose said back and permit the rapid and convenient application to said back of the sheets of blotting-paper, and after the sheets I of blotting-paper have been placed upon said back the hinged section 0 will then be closed downward to retain the blotting-paper in position, and said section 0 will be held in its closed position by the pressure of the spring H. hen it is desired to remove the sheets of blotting-paper from the back A for the purpose of supplying additional sheets, the

hinged sections 0 will simply be turned upward on their edges, so as to fully expose the corners of the blotting-paper and permit of the rapid and convenient removal of the latter. The corner-pieces are, as above described, removable from the back A, and hence whenever desired a new back A may be substituted for the one in use and without injury to the corner-pieces. Said new back may be either larger or smaller than the one previously used, since said corner-pieces are adapted to any right-angularcorner, and thus it is immaterial, so far as the corner-pieces are concerned, whether the back A is larger or smaller or in outline a perfect square or an oblong. The hinged sections 0 may be given various ornamental embellishments or outlines, and thus be made to add to the attractive character of the desk-pad.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The desk-pad having adjacent to the corner thereof the spring-latch J ,combined with a removable corner-piece comprising a frame F adapted to inclose the edges of the pad and having the opening K therein to receive the engaging portion of said latch when said frame is passed upon said edges; substantially as set forth.

2. The pad and the corner-pieces thereof, said corner-pieces consisting of the hinged section 0 and carrying-frame F, combined with the spring H thereon to lock the hinged section in its open and closed positions, and a latch for removably securing said frame F to the pad; substantially as set forth.
