This invention relates to improvements in school desks and seat covers and is particu-- larly adapted for use in connection with the ordinary type of desk found in the lower 5 grades of public schools and the like.

A primary object of this invention is to provide a removable cover for-a desk which will eliminate the possibilities for the pupil to mar or damage the desk or seat portions by scraping or cutting with a knife or other sharp element or by; defacing the surface with lead pencil mar s.

A further object of this invention is to provide a desk and seat cover which may be readily removed and replaced by a new portion or cover when the old section becomes damaged or soiled.

One of the principal objects of this invention is to provide a desk pad or cover held in remova le position by means ofa front and side clamping member, which functions at the same time as a complete protection for the front and side edges of the desk or seat portions.

Other objects of this invention will appear from the following detailed description of the device and as disclosed in the two sheets of drawings which are herewith made a part of this application.

In the drawings- I Figure 1 illustrates a perspective View of the desk and seat cover according to this invention in removable relationship with the ordinary desk found in public schools.

Figure 2 illustrates a vertical sectional view of the desk, seat and back portions to an enlarged scale disclosing the means for' binding and interlocking the desk, seat and back cover portions together.

Figure 3 represents a rear elevational view of the lower portion of the seat back disclosingthe means for holding the free ends of the seat back binding strips in interlocked relationship with the edge binding strips of the seat portion.

Figure 4 illustrates a perspective view of the interlocking ends of the binding strips for the seat back and seat portions, just before being brought into interlocked position.

Figure 5 is a top sectional plan view of the rear portion of the top of the desk and the seat back, taken along line 55 of Figure 2,

pencils and the like of pupils.

In order to prolong the life of school furniture this invention provides a removable desk pad or cover 4, back seat cover 5, and

seat cover 6, the cover portions being held in firm and fixed relationship to the desk by or pad material of the usual type, while the binding or clamping strips should be made of a material having sufiicient clamping power for the purpose desired. The most,

suitable material for the binding strips should be metal in order that interlocking tongue portions 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15 may be integrally formed therefrom.

The desk cover 4 is formed having a notched section 16 extending around three side edges for receiving the binding strip 7, which is preferably channel-shaped and of sufficient width to include within the channel the desk cover 4 and the desk top 1, as clearly shown in Figure 8.

When the desk cover 4 has been damaged, it may be easily replaced by a new cover, the binding strip 7 being detachably positioned in relationship to .the desk top and cover. As one means for holding the binding strip 7 in fixed relationship to the cover 4 and desk 1, it is preferred that suitable openings 17 be formed in the lower flange 18 of the binding strip 7, as clearly disclosed in Figures 7 and'8, in order to cooperate with a spring catch element 19 adapted to be fastened to the underside of the desk 1 by means of screws 20, or otherwise, in such a manner that a portion of the catch element 19 will extend through the openings 17 when the binding strip 7 is located in position, thereby holding the desk 1, cover 4, and binding strip 7 in fixed and firm relationship'to each other until it is desired to replace the cover 4 with a new one.

which are adapted to extend through coopcrating slots 21 and 22 of the binding strip 8. From the construction of the binding strips it is apparent that they may be easily removed and the cover portions released as desired.

As a further modification of means for holding the binding strip 7 in fixed relationship to the cover 4 and desk 1, a tongue or latch portion 23 may be integrally formed from the lower flange 18 of the binding strip 7, as clearly disclosed in Figures 11 and 12, in such a manner that when the binding strip 7 is located in position, the latch 23 will function to be received within an opening 24 of a plate 25, which is securely fastened to the desk 1 by means of screw 26 or otherwise.

This invention provides a very efiicient cover for school .desks, simple and inexpensive of manufacture and easily applied to suitable furniture in the school room.

It will be noted that by first applying the clamping member 7 to the desk part and sliding the clamping member 8 down over the back part and then sliding clamping member 9 in over the seat part, the interlocking of tongues 13, 14 of member 9, with tongues 21, 22 of member 8 will interlock both of said members 8 and 9 into fixed relation with the seat and back respectively, while the engagement of tongues 10 of member 8 with tongues 11 of member 7 will prevent the withdrawal of the clamping member 7 even without the use of the additional or supplementary locking members 17 or 24 provided for more securely holding member 7 to the desk top if desired It will be understood that many changes and modifications may be made in the form of embodiment of this invention within the scope of the following claims without departother, notches in the cover for slidably re-.

2. In a school desk having desk top, seat, and back rest sections, detachable cover portions for the sections, clamping members slidably positioned along three edges of each of the sections for detachably holding the covers in position and means for interlocking said clamping members.

3. In a school desk having desk top, seat, and back rest sections, detachable cover portions for the sections, U-shaped clamping members slidably positioned along three edges of each of the sections for detachably holding the covers in position, three edges of each of the covers being notched to slidably receive the clamping members, tongue portions extending from the ends of the clamping members, the adjacent tongues of said clamping members adapted to cooperate to hold the clamping members and cover sections in fixed relationship to the desk top, back rest, and seat.

In a combination desk and chair having desk, back and seat parts, covers for the desk, back and seat and means for removably securing said covers in.position comprising three substantially U shaped rim engaging clamping members of channel cross-section adapted each to engage and secure together three edges of the desk, back and seat parts with their superimposed covers, said clamping members having interlocking engagement members.

Ina combination desk and chair having desk, back and 'seat parts, and removable covers for said parts, U shaped clamping members of channel cross section to engage the marginal edges of said parts and their covers, tongues on the ends of each of said clamping members and tongues on the flange of the leg parts of one clamping member whereby adjacent parts ofsaid members, when assembled interlock to form a unitary clamping member.

6. The structure specified in claim 5 in which the interlocking tongues on the clamping members constitute mortise and tenon connections to prevent the. spreading of the leg members or the longitudinal withdrawal of the legs of one clamping member from engagement with another.
