SAMUEL F. LONG, OF CANTON, OHIO,
ASSIGNOR TO THE ARMOR CLAD MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF CANTON, OHIO, A CORPORATION.
DRAWER CONSTRUCTION.
Specification of Letters Patent.-
Patented Mar. 9, 1920..
Application filed April 30, 1917. Serial No. 165,319.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL F. Lone, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drawer Construction. of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to the construction of drawers for sheet metal filing cabinets. and the object of the improvement is to form one or more handles and a label holder integral with the face'or finishing wall of the drawer.
This object of the improvement is attained by cutting and stamping the handles and label holder from the sheet metal face wall of the drawer and securing the same to the front wall of the drawer, which front wall forms a closure for the openings in the face wall.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a filing cabinet containing drawers provided with the improvement;
Fig. 2, a fragmentary front view of one drawer, partly in section, showing one handle, and having parts broken away to show details of construction;
Fig. 3, a section on line 3-3, Fig. 2;
Fig. l, a fragmentary front view of one drawer showing the label holder;
Fig. 5, a section on line 5-5, Fig. 4; and
Fig. 6, a perspective view of one drawer having one side wall thereof removed to show details of construction.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the drawings.
The cabinet may be composed of a series of sections 1 each having a plurality of drawers 2, and all mounted upon a suitable base 3.
Each drawer is preferably composed of a bottom 4 having its forward end turned upward to form the front wall 5 of the drawer, and side walls 6 which are preferably made of channel members having outturned flanges 7; and the side walls are preferably secured to the down-turned flanges 8 on the side edges of the bottom, and may also be secured to the transverse shield of retainer 9 which is preferably provided at the rear end of the drawer, and a channel rib 10 may also be secured to the bottom of the drawer for stiffening the same.
The face wall 11 of the drawer is preferably made of a sheet of metal placed against the front wall 5, provided with the inturned flange 12 on its lower edge having its ends secured to the lower flanges 7 of the side walls and also provided with the inturned flange 13 on its upper edge having its ends secured to the upper flanges 7 of the side walls.
Each handle 14 is made by cutting a slit, at 15, in the face wall to form the lower rim of the depending handle, and then stamping or pressing the handle directly forward from the body of the wall, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3; and each label holder 16 is made by cutting a slit, at 17, in the face wall to form the upper rim of the holder and also cutting a rectangular opening l8 in the face wall immediately below said slit, after which the metal in the face wall at the ends and bottom of said opening is pressed or stamped forward to form an offset U-shaped rim adapted to receive and retain the ends and bottom edges of a label or card 19, which is adapted to be inserted from above behind said rims.
At the same time, the protrusion 20 is stamped forward from the body of the face wall above the middle of the label opening, which protrusion serves to retain the label or card in the holder, the card being forced forward slightly to pass the protrusion, after which its upper edge springs backward under the overhanging protrusion.
. It is evident that the front wall 5 of the drawer forms an inside closure for the opening made by cutting and pressing out the handles and label holder from the face wall thereof, and also forms a back for the card or label inserted behind the rims 16 of the label holder. By this simple and convenient construction the handles and label holder are. made integral with the face wall and are fOlll'lG-(l therefrom by a single cutting and stamping operation; and the handle, by being pressed directly forward, overhangs and conceals the opening formed in the face wall by cutting and pressing the handle therefrom.
I claim 1. A drawer for a cabinet or the like including a sheet metal face wall having an integral pendent handle with its rim cut and its body pressed directly forward from the plane of the wall so as to conceal the opening made by forming the handle.
2. A drawer for a cabinet or the like, including a front wall, and a sheet metal face wall upon the front wall having an integral pendent'handle with its rim cut and its body pressed directly forward from the plane of the face Wall, said front wall forming a closure for the opening of the handle and the handle concealing said opening.
8. A drawer for a cabinet or the like having a face wall with an opening therein and an ofiset rim slit across the upper ends and pressed forward from the plane of the face wall at the ends and the bottom of the opening, an inside closure for the opening spaced from the offset rims, and a protrusion pressed forward from. the edge, of the face wall above the opening.
