A primary object is to provide a novel drawer pull and label holder combination, which may be provided in various lengths and may be easily attached to a drawer.

A further object is to provide a drawer pull and label holder combination, wherein the position of the label holder on the drawer pull may be readily adjusted, and the label holder may be easily attached to the drawer pull but will not easily become accidentally dislodged.

Other objects and advantages will become apparent from the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying figures of the drawing, in which:

FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a cabinet having drawers provided with drawer pull and label holder combinations embodying the invention;

FIG. 2 is an enlarged front elevational view of the drawer pull and label holder combination.

FIG. 3 is an end elevational view of the drawer pull;

FIG. 4 is an end elevational view of the label holder; and

FIG. 5 is an end elevational view of the drawer pull and label holder combination, fastened to a drawer.

Generally, a drawer pull and label holder combination embodying the invention is adapted to be attached to the front panel of a'drawer adjacent an edge of the front panel. The pull includes a trough portion which has one wall seated on said edge of the panel with the opening of the trough portion facing forwardly of the drawer. A lip is formed onthe other wall of the trough portion which extends toward said one wall and partially closes said opening. To open a drawer having such a pull attached thereto, the fingers are inserted into the opening of the trough portion in back of the lip and the latter is pulled forwardly.

The label holder is shaped to be inserted into the trough portion from an end of the pull and has a label holding portion exposed in the opening of the trough portion. The inner surface of the opening is formed to engage the label holder and hold it in place.

In the drawing, in FIG. 1 a cabinet is shown to illustrate one use of the invention, the cabinet including a slidably mounted drawer, indicated generally by the numeral 11. The drawer 11 includes a front wall or panel 13 and the space below the drawer is shown closed by a door 14 which may be hinged to the frame of the cabinet along one of its vertical edges or its bottom edge. Identical pull and label holder combinations embodying the invention may be used with the front panel 13 of the drawer 11 and with the door 14.

The pull 16 is of uniform cross-sectional shape throughout its length and comprises a trough portion including an inner wall 23, a back wall 25, and an outer wall 27. The inner wall 23 extends forwardly of the back wall 25, and is seated on the upper edge of the panel 13. The upper edge of the panel and the inner wall 23 are preferably formed at an obtuse angle, for example 120, to the back wall 25 as shown in FIG. 5 for a purpose to be explained hereinafter. The forward edge 24 of the inner wall 23 is turned downwardly and is seated in a groove 29 (FIG. 5) formed in the forward surface 26 of the panel 13. The outer wall 27 extends forwardly from United States Patent 0 the back wall 25 and is spaced from the panel 13 and the inner wall 23. A lip 28 extends from the forward edge of the outer wall 27 laterally of the wall 27 toward the inner wall 23, and it partially closes the trough opening. The forward surface of the lateral lip 28 is preferably in the same plane as the forward edge 24 of the inner wall 23.

Means is provided to attach the trough portion to the upper edge of the panel. In the present instance, this means comprises a flat plate portion 18 formed in the plane of the back wall 25. The plate portion 18 is adapted to be secured to the rearward surface 19 (FIG. 5) of the front panel 13, for example. As shown in FIG. 5, the rearward surface 19 adjacent the upper edge of the panel 13 is recessed to permit the plate portion 18 to lie flush with the surface 19. A plurality of countersunk holes 21 are provided in the plate portion 18, through which screws 22 extend to fasten the plate portion 18 to the panel 13.

As shown in FIGS. 1 and 5, the pull 16 is mounted on the panel 13 with the plate portion 18 on the rearward side of the panel and the trough opening facing forwardly. When a person desires to open the drawer, he inserts his fingers into this opening behind the lip 28, and draws the drawer forwardly. The force exerted on the pull tends to pivot the pull about the forward edge 24 of the inner wall 23, but this force is resisted by the screws 22 and by the inner wall 23 which bears against the upper portion of the rear face of panel 13. A further advantage of this construction is that a neat appearance is presented because the screws 22 are hidden inside the drawer.

The label holder 17 is adapted to be attached to the pull 16 by inserting it into one end of the trough portion. As shown in FIG. 1, the length of the label holder 17 is preferably much shorter than that of the pull 16, so that the pull may still be grasped at any point throughout the major portion of its length.

With reference to FIGS. 4 and 5, the label holder 17 is of uniform cross-sectional shape throughout its length and comprises a first or horizontal wall 31 and a second or vertical wall 32. The width of the horizontal wall 31 is such that it fits snugly against the inner side of the outer wall 27 of the pull 16 between the back wall 25 and the lip 28, and the height of the vertical wall 32 is such that it fits snugly between the outer wall 27 and the forward edge of the inner wall 23. e Y

The pull 16 and the label holder 17 are formed such that the pull engages the label holder and holds it in place within the trough portion. In the present instance, two ribs 33 (FIG. 3) are formed on the lip 28 and the back wall 25 of the pull 16, which are located adjacent but spaced from the outer wall 27 and extend substantially the entire length of the pull. Cooperating with the ribs 33 are two grooves 34 formed respectively in the vertical wall 32 of the label holder 17 and a downwardly extending lip 35 on the rear edge of the horizontal wall 31. The grooves 34 mate or interlock with the ribs 33 to hold label holder in place.

The lower part of the vertical wall 32 is visible through the opening of the trough portion, and two vertically spaced L-shaped flanges 36 (FIG. 4) are formed on the forward side of the vertical wall 32, one flange being located at the lower edge of the vertical wall 32 and seating on the inner wall 28 of the pull and the other flange abutting the lower edge of the lip 28 of the pull. These flanges form grooves to receive a label, shown in dashed lines and indicated by the numeral 37 in FIG. 5. It will be noted that the inner wall 23 of the pull slopes from its forward edge toward the outer wall 27, which prevents 3 the lower edge of the vertical wall 32 of the label holder from being pushed rearwardly.

In the specification and claims, when the term panel is used it is intended to cover either the front wall of a drawer or a door such as the door 14.

Since the pull 16 and the label holder 17 are each of uniform cross-sectional shape, they may be inexpensively manufactured of extruded material such as aluminum, for example, and each part may be cut to any desired length. If it is desired to provide a drawer pull having a length shorter than the width of the drawer, a portion of the panel equal to the desired length of pull is cut out to accommodate the pull, the outer portion 27 of the pull preferably being flush with the edge of the panel. The combination presents a very neat appearance because the screws 22 are hidden and since the forward surfaces of the pull and label holder combination are flush with the forward surface 26 of the panel, the combination has the appearance of being a continuation of the panel 13.

I claim:

1. A drawer pull and label holder combination for a drawer or the like having a front panel, comprising an elongated pull in the form of a trough including inner and outer walls thereby providing a finger-engaging recess of sufiicient size to receive the ends of an 'operators fingers, said pull including means for securing said trough to said panel with said inner wall adapted to be seated on an edge of said panel, said outer wall being adapted to be spaced outwardly from said edge, and the opening of said trough facing forwardly of the drawer, and a separate label holder slidably positioned within said trough and visible through said opening, said label holder and said pull including means formed thereon for holding said label holder member in place within said trough.

2. A drawer pull and label holder combination as in claim 1, wherein said label holder includes first and second walls, said first wall being positioned against the inner surface of said outer wall of said trough, and said second wall extending across said opening of said trough.

A drawer pull and label holder combination as in claim 1, wherein said pull further includes a lip extending from the forward edge of said outer wall toward said inner wall and partially closing said opening, and a portion of said label holder is positioned within said opening and behind said lip.

A drawer pull and label holder combination as in claim 1, wherein said pull further includes a rear wall extending between said inner and outer walls, and a plate formed in the plane of said rear wall and extending from said inner wall away from said outer wall externally of the trough, said plate being adapted to be attached to the rearward surface of the panel,

A drawer pull and label holder combination as in claim 1 wherein said pull further includes a rear wall extending between said inner and outer walls and a rib formed on said inner wall adjacent the rearward edge of said outer wall, said label holder having a rearwardly extending portion engaging said rib, and said rearwardly extending portion including a downwardly extending lip, said lip having a groove formed therein, said groove engaging said rib.

A drawer pull and label holder combination as in claim 1, wherein said pull further includes a rear wall extending between said inner and outer walls, and a rib formed on said rear wall adjacent the rearward edge of said outer wall, said label holder having a rearwardly extending portion engaging said rib, said pull further including a lip extending from the forward edge of said outer wall toward said inner wall, a portion of said label holder being positioned behind said lip, and a second rib formed on the inner surface of said lip, and said label holder further includes a groove which engages said second rib.

A drawer pull and label holder combination as in claim 2, wherein said second wall of said label holder extends across said opening of said trough and rests on said inner wall adjacent the forward edge thereof and said inner wall slopes toward said outer wall from its forward end, said slope preventing said label holder from being pushed rearwardly.

8. A drawer pull and label holder combination as in claim 1, wherein said label holder includes upper and lower flanges for holding a label, said flanges engaging said pull at the upper and lower margins of said opening.

Claims

1. A DRAWER PULL AND LABEL HOLDER COMBINATION FOR A DRAWER OR THE LIKE HAVING A FRONT PANEL, COMPRISING AN ELONGATED PULL IN THE FORM OF A TROUGH INCLUDING INNER AND OUTER WALLS THEREBY PROVIDING A FINGER-ENGAGING RECESS OF SUFFICIENT SIZE TO RECEIVE THE ENDS OF AN OPERATOR''S FINGERS, SAID PULL INCLUDING MEANS FOR SECURING SAID TROUGH TO SAID PANEL WITH SAID INNER WALL ADAPTED TO BE SEATED ON AN EDGE OF SAID PANEL, SAID OUTER WALL BEING ADAPTED TO BE SPACED OUTWARDLY FROM SAID EDGE, AND THE OPENING OF SAID TROUGH FACING FORWARDLY OF THE DRAWER, AND A SEPARATE LABEL HOLDER SLIDABLY POSITIONED WITHIN SAID TROUGH AND VISIBLE THROUGH SAID OPENING, SAID LABEL HOLDER AND SAID PULL INCLUDING MEANS FORMED THEREON FOR HOLDING SAID LABEL HOLDER MEMBER IN PLACE WITHIN SAID TROUGH.
