SINK CABINET Filed NOV. 2'7, 1933 Fug-z i I Ll- I I g [I INVENTOR.
grchifmld. m. Yhwria Patented Nov. 27, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 3 Claims.
This invention relates to cabinets for association with sinks and the like.
An object of the invention is to provide a cabinet in association with a sink, having cover members serving to completely conceal both the sink and its overlying faucets, when not in use.
Another object is to provide a cabinet of the described character, which may be used as a side table, when covered.
A further object is to adapt one of the cover members of the cabinet to form a shelf, above the sink, when the latter is uncovered.
A still further object is to provide said cabinet with a drain board, which is readily removable from its position of use and may be stored within the sink when the cabinet is covered.
These and various other objects, the invention attains by the construction hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein:
Fig. 1 is a front elevational View of the cabinet, associated with a sink and its faucet, showing the covers raised.
Fig. 2 is a sectional elevational view of the same, taken on the line 2--2 of Fig. 1.
In these views, the reference character 1 designates a kitchen sink, of ordinary construction, having the usual drain trap 2 opening therefrom, and having the usual faucets 3 arranged to di..- charge therein.
Said sink is supported upon and within a rectangular, open-backed casing 4, formed preferably of sheet metal, the side walls of said casing carrying angle bars 5, on which the sink is supported by the usual marginal flange at its top.
Rising from the rear portion of the casing 4 is a hood 6, extending the full length of said casing and comprising end walls, 7, a back plate 8, and a top plate 9. Said hood rises well above the faucets 3 and is equipped with a marginally flanged cover member 10, (preferably sheet metal), which is hinged at 11 to the front edge of the plate 9. In position shown in full lines in Fig. 2 said cover member, together with the hood 6 fully conceals the faucets, while as shown in dash lines in said figure, the cover member seats upright upon the hood, giving free access to the faucets. Secured to the front face of the cover member 10, near its lower edge, is a second cover member 12, which, in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 2 seats on the top of the casing 4 and fully covers the sink, while in its dash line position, as shown in said figure, the cover member 12 is largely concealed by the member 10, be-
hing. the latter, and free access is had to the s1n A drain board 13, preferably a sheet metal stamping, is adapted to freely rest, at one end, upon a side wall of the casing 4, the other end of said board being supported by a chain 14 or the like, extending to the hood 6, so as to suitably incline the board toward the sink. A pair of lugs 15 depending from said board at each lateral edge thereof freely abut the casing 4 to maintain the board in working position. When the board is not in use, it may be stored within the sink, as Fig. 2 illustrates. A door 16 in the front of the casing 4 gives access to the trap 2 for cleaning out the same, and a floor 17 extending the full width and length of the casing beneath said door permits storage of articles in the casing.
The invention is presented as including all such modifications and changes as come within the scope of the following claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a sink cabinet, the combination with a sink and a faucet discharging into said sink, of a casing receiving said sink in its upper portion, a hood rising from the rear portion of said casing comprising end walls and a top plate surmounting said walls, a cover member for said hood, adapted to seat rearwardly against said end walls in its covering position, means hinging said cover member to said plate, and a cover member for the sink hinged to said hood cover member, and projecting in its covering position forwardly from the hood cover member and downwardly seating on said casing, said cover members being movable as a unit to an uncovering position, surmounting said plate.
2. A sink cabinet as set forth in claim 1, the sink being substantially flush with the upper edge of said casing.
3. A sink cabinet as set forth in claim 1, the hood cover member having a top plate and the top plates of the hood and hood cover member being connected by said hinge means, said top plates being flush with each other in the covering position of the hood cover member, the hood top plate serving to seat the hood cover member in an upright position on the hood in the uncovering position of the hood cover member.
