CABINET Filed July 21, 1926 ,nnlilllllllllllllll IIIIH WORNEY Fatentecl Oct. 28, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CABINET Application filed July 21, 1926. Serial No. 124,007.
My invention relates to improvements in cabinets and particularly those adapted for use as telephone boothsQ. In the latter apparatus now in general use a vertical box about two feet square by about six or seven feet high is provided, with a door at one side which the patron closes after entering the booth, when he is shut in with no ventilation save by opening the door. Such cabinet or booth has practically no ventilation in its normal condition, is diflicult to clean and is very unsanitary. My invention has for its primary object to provide a new type of cabinet or booth for the remedying of these objectionable conditions.
In the accompanying drawings Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a cabinetjembodying my invention in section on the central line 1-1 of Fig. 3; Fig. 2 is a front elevation of my said apparatus; Fig. 3 is a top or plan view of the upper portion of said apparatus in section on the line 33 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a similar view of part of the apparatus of Fig. 3 showing a modification; Fig. 5is a side elevation showing a modification.
Referring to the drawings, a box like portion 1 is preferably enclosed on all its six sides save the bottom, and may be supported on two or more legs 2. The sides of portion 1 may be of any desired material, such as metal, wood, fiber, glass, &c. or part of them may be of one and part of another material. I prefer that the apparatus shall be supported by legs 2 resting on a floor or other base, and that the back 3 of the cabinet rest against a wall or equivalent support; and the upper portion of the legs may be secured to said wall, or they may be omitted and the cabinet fastened directly to awall or support by bolts or screws through its back 3, as illustrated in Fig. 5. A standard or any ordinary telephone transmitter 1 and receiver 5 are placed inside cabinet 1, and secured in any convenient way, as for instance to the 4 back portion 3 thereof.
The bottom 6 of box portion 1 has a U- shaped section cut out, and the front is enclosed by one or more doors 7 which may be swung on double acting hinges 8 so as to close automatically and stand normally closed, but able to open either inwardly or outwardly. The parts of 6 not cut away may serve as a writing table or stand for taking notes, or as a rest for a telephone directory or other book or object. 'lVhen a patron enters the cabinet to use the telephone, the doors 7 close behind him, he leans lightly against the semi-circular edge of the bottom 6 of cabinet 1, and his body nearly or quite fills the U-shaped space 10 that is cut out of said bottom 6. The upper portion of the patrons-body is then practically enclosed by the box or cabinet portion 1 assuring him silence and secrecy. Thus the booth is always well ventilated and the lower portion and the floor beneath can always be kept clean and wholesome. The bottom 6 may be located about as high as the average patrons waist line 'or at other desirable height.
Fig. 5 shows a modification in which the legs are absent and the cabinet is fastened directly to the wall 12 by any suitable means 11.
I claim:
1. A box like cabinet having a stationary back, side walls and a top and a movable front wall serving as closure, a bottom in said cabinet arranged at an elevation from the base, said bottom being cut away centrally from the front edge toward the rear wall sufficiently to accommodate the waist portion of a patrons body, but in width less than the entire width of the cabinet so as to form side wings against the front edges of which the said movable front wall will abut when in closed position and thereby form a sufficiently tight closure of the cabinet while the latter is in use.
2. A. box like cabinet as per claim 1, in which the same is fixed to a support adapted to rest on the base and holding said cabinet at a convenient elevation from said base.
