Be it known that I, CHARLES F. CLARKE, a citizen of Great Britain, residing at Madison, in the county of Dane and State of lvisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Book End, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in book ends for supporting a number of books on any suitable flat surface such as a table, a desk or the like and has for its principal object to provide a means for including a picture frame on the outer face of the upstanding wall of the book ends.

A further object of the invention is to provide a book end of the above mentioned character, which includes a means for removably supporting a picture or a sheet of i material within the frame, the parts being so arranged as to enable pictures to be easily and readily inserted or removedrfrom between the frame andthe upstanding wall of each book end.

A further object of the invention is to provide a book end of the above mentioned character, which is simple in construction,

inexpensive, strong and durable and furthermore adapted for the purposes for which it is designated.

Other objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent during the course of the following description.

In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals designate like parts throughout the same:

In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral l designates the base of each of the book ends, it being understood of course that a pair of book ends are provided for cooperation in supporting a number of books in proper position on a desk or table. Extending upwardly from one end of the sheet metal base l and formed integrally therewith is the wall 2 against the inner face of which the outermost books rest. Secured to the outer face of each wall of the book end and conforming to the shape or design of the upstanding wall is the frame 3, the same being constructed preferably of wood. The securing means therefor is illustrated at t in the drawing.

The wooden frame 8 has the enlarged opening 5 of the same design as the contour or shape of the frame in the manner clearly illustrated in Figure 2. The inner face of the frame 3 adjacent the respective sides of the openings 5 are cut away as illustrated at 6, the bottom of the wooden frame 3 has its rear face also out away as illustrated at 7 to provide a means for inserting a picture or sheet of palper bearing any suitable indicia suoli as is shown at 8 between the frame and the outer face of the upstanding wall 2 of each book end, the sheet of material or picture being disposed within the cut away portions provided in the rear portion of the frame.

For the purpose of removably supporting the picture within the frame so that the same will be prevented from being accidentally disengaged therefrom, I provide the lower portion of each upstanding wall 2 with the enlarged opening 9 so that a thumb tack or the like illustrated at l() will extend through the lower portion of the picture or sheet of material 8 when the latter is disposed within the frame, and the point of the thumb tack will extend into the bottom of the wooden frame 3 in the manner clearly illustrated in Figure 3. The thumb tack may be readily removed so that the picture or sheet of material may be removed from the frame whenever desired.

The provision of a book end of the above mentioned character, will add to the orna mentality of the same and if desired, a sheet of material inserted in the frame may have thereon suitable indicia indicative of the books supported between the book ends se that a person may readily ascertain'exactly the names of the books which are supported in upright position between the book ends.

For the purpose of preventing the book ends from defacing the top of the desk or table or any other flat surface upon which the same are placed, the base of each book end has a felt` pad 11 on the under side thereof.

`While I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that various changes in the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claimS. o i Y Having thus described the invention, what I Claim is:

A book end comprising a base portion, an upstanding Wall at one end thereof, having an opening, a frame secured to the outer face of the Wall and crossing the opening,the bottom of said :trame being slotted to permit the insertion of a sheet of material between the outer face of the wall and the rear face of the frame, and a fastening element adapted to be inserted through the sheet of material into the frame through the opening.
