COMBINED EASEL AND SHEET-MUSIC CABINET.

SIECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 401,389, dated April 16, 1889.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, OSCAR Sronnann, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of W'Vayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Easel and Sheet- Music Cabinet 5 and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the ac companying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to a combined easel and sheetrmusic cabinet.

The object of the invention is to provide a cabinet for music wherein the sheets may be supported in such position as to readily enable the withdrawal of any desired sheet or sheets, avoiding the necessity of assorting a quantity of the sheets, as is usual. The easel also forms a support for pictures, whereby the sheet-music may be hidden from the dust and view, making an ornamental and very useful piece of furniture.

The invention consists of two uprights suitably connected at top and bottom by strips or panels to form an easel-frame with opening through its center. Back of said opening is secured to the uprights of said easel a box or case, in whichthe music is supported on an incline by means of a frame provided with transverse bars carrying pockets formed from a continuous sheet or strip of fabricor flexible material which is adapted to receive and support the sheets of music. Said frame carrying the pockets has its lower end hinged within the opening of the easel, while the upper end of said frame rests against the back of the case, thus throwing said frame on an incline, whereby the pockets are caused to rise one above the other, and as the title of each sheet of music is printed on the upper edge, the operator may at a glance locate and remove the desired sheet or sheets from their pockets, all of which will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and the essential features pointed out particularly in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective of my combined easel and sheetmusic cabinet complete. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of Fig. 1, showing pictureframe supported in front of opening to the cabinet, and by dotted lines. as swung outward. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are enlarged details of the pockets and supporting-frame.

In the drawings, E represents the easelframe, which may be constructed in any desired style, but the form shown being most preferred. a

C shows a box or case, which is secured to the back of said easel-frame and extends from the top of the open front, F, of said easelframe some distance below the bottom of said opening, having the supporting-leg B hinged at h to its back 13, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

A shows a frame located within the open front, F, in which is secured by means of screws 6, (see Fig. 4,) the rails H, having the metal rods i) let into said rails, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4.

f represents a continuous strip of fabric, one end of which is secured to the upper rod 1) of the series, extending down is folded at e, and passes back over the next rod, forming the pocket a, and so on throughout the series of rods, as shown clearly in Figs. 2 and The strip of fabric f may be wide enough to cover the rods '0, as shown in Fig. 1, or said fabric may consist of strips attached as shown in Fig. 5, having the portions overlapping the rods secured thereto by stitching through the fabric, as shown at t of Fig. 5.

The lower end of the frame A is hinged at h to the easel-frame at the bottom of the opening F in said easel-frame. The upper end of the frame A extends into the case 0, resting against the back thereof, whereby the pockets at are caused to hang in a perpendicular position and in elevation to each other,'as shown clearly in Fig. 2. Said pockets are less in depth than the length of the sheets S of music, which project from the mouth or openings 0 at the top of said pockets, and have printed on their upper margins the title of the piece of music, as shown in Fig. 1, whereby the desired sheet or sheets may at a glance be distinguished, and can readilybe removed by drawing the upper end of the frame Aforward to the opening F in the easel by means of the knob 'n attached thereto, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, when the sheet or sheets may be lifted out of their pockets with the thumb and finger, or placed in said pockets, as desired.

D represents a picture-frame or painting, which is supported on the pins 2 z in front of the opening F to the case, for the purpose of excluding dust from the sheet-music, and also to hide said sheet-music from view when not in use, making an ornament and giving the cabinet the appearance of an ordinary easel; and to remove the sheets of music in such case the picture-frame or banner D may be tipped forward or swung outward, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, to give access to the cabinet.

Having thus fully set forth my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In combination with the easel-frame having the open front, the case mounted on the back of said easel-frame, and the frame located in said case and having a series of supporting-rods, said rods having attached thereto the strip of textile fabric or flexible material forming the pockets for the sheet-music, as and for the purpose specified.

2. In combination with the easel-frame having the openfront, the case mounted on the back thereof, the leg hinged to said case, the frame located in said case having its lower end hinged to the easel-frame, the series of rods attached to the frame A, and the flexible material mounted on said rods and doubled, so as to form the series of pockets a,substantially as and for the purposes specified.

3. In combination with the easel-frame having the opening F, the case 0, attached to the back face of the easel-frame and communicat ing with the opening thereof, and having' OSCAR STODDARD.
