"Specification 01 Letters Patent.
Patented Mar; 18,1913.
Application tiled members, 1912. Serial No. 734.449.
'1 '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL Kisnovrrz, a snh'ect of the Czar of Russia, and a resident of lioboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have'invented certain new and useful Improvements in Easels, of which the following is a specification.
The invention pertains to the character of easels attached to the back of and adapted to support in an inclined standing osition display cards, photographs and the like and its ob ect is to provide an easel capable of ready attachment to the back of the card and of having its foldable brace member or members conveniently and securely locked in operative position.
My invention relates more articularly to the novel interlocking mem ers presented herein for securing the brace part or parts of the easel in o erative position said members lieing forme from the material of the easel and capable of ready manipulation. The easel will preferably be formed in one into ral piece from cardboard, strawboard or he like and when not in use may lie flat so as to occupy the minimum amount of space. The easel of my invention may. be formed with one brace-member or two bracemembers, as may be desired or the use of the device require. 2
The invention consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed and is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a back view of a display card having the easel of m invention secured thereto, the easel being a own in its flat nonsnpportin position and as having two hrace-mem rs; Fig. 2 is a like view of the same, the brace-members being shown as having been turned outwardly at an angle to the card and locked insupporting position; Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section through the same on the dotted line 8-8 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a horizontal section throu h the same on the dottedline 4-4 of Fig." Fig. 5 is a detached perspective view 0 my eascl when constructed with only one brace member, said memberbein shown as having been turned to its opera ive position, the sccurin devices being illustrated as partly intcrloc ed, and theupper locking tongue bein shown as ready to be turned downwar 1y to engage the a per end-of the lockin g section carried by e brace-member and complete the locking of said member, and Fig. 0 is a rear elevation, on a smaller scale, of the single brace easel represented in F ig. 5, the easel being shown in its lat inopcra; tive position.
In the drawings, designates a display card, photogra h mount or the like of usual character, to t to back of which my easel is secured by Ipasting or otherwise.
The ease referring to Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4,
comprises, in one integral piece, a backmember 11 to be pasted or otherwise attached to the card 10 and two brace-members 12, which correspond with each other and at their inner edges join the back-member 11 along vertical scored 01' weakened lines, represented at 13, so as to lie flat, as shown in Fig. 1, or be turned or bent outwardly at an angle to the card 10, as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4.
In the back 11 I form upper and lower corrcs onding locking tongues 14, 15 by slitting tie material of the easel transversely. as at 16, and approximately vertically, as at 17 said slits defining the outer ends and si es of said tongues. The upper tongue 14 is connected with the back 11 along a transverse score or weakened line 18, and the lower tongue 15 is connected with the back 11 along a transverse score or weakened line 19. The tongue 14 may be turned outwardly and upwardly on the hinge-line 18, and the tongue 15 may be turned outwardly and downwardly on the hinge-line 19, as
shown and said tongues 14, 15 are each formed with two transverse slots, those in the tongue 14 bein numbered 20 and those in the tongue 15 being designated 21.
The brace-members 12 are formed, from the material thereof, with corresponding vertical locking sections 22 which, in the blank or fiat condition of the easel, extend along the opposite side edges of the. tongues 14, 15 and have their free vertical edges defined and formed by the slits 17. The upct'and lower ends of the sections 22 are ormed by slits 23 which are about on horizontal planes with the hinge-lines 18, 19 for the tongues 14, 15, and said sections at their non-free edges are joined to the brace-memhere 12 alon vertical score or weakened hinge-lines 2 so that they may be turned outwardly at an angle to the members 12 when the easel is to be put into use. The upper and lower ends of the sections 22 are formed with projecting tongues 25 0211 size adapted toreceiveuPon thein the slots. 20, 21 of the tongues 14,15" when said-sections and tongues 14, are placed in interlocking relation withone another. I
When the easel is to be placed in use the tongue It will be turned -upwardly,; the tongue 15 downwardly, the 'se'ctions 22 out; wardly at an an le to thebrace-members 12 and said members 12 outwardly toward each other at an angle to-the back 11',and thereupon the upper tongue 14 will be closed downwardly upon the upper ends of the sections 22 and the lower tongue 15 upwardly against the lower ends of the sections 22, the whole being locked together by the fact that the slots pass upon and engage the upper tongues of the sections 22 and the slots 21 pass upon and engage the lower tongues .25 of said sections, as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4.
The locking means presented by me restill. in use, in both brace-members 12 being securely held in their operative position.
In many instances an easel having only one brace-member will be sutiicient, and therefore in Figs. 5 and 6 I illustrate my invention as embodied in a single-brace easel, whose construction and operation will be readily understood without special detailed explanation in view of its substantial correspondence with the structure shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive. In Fi 5 and 6 the hack of the easel is numbere 26 and the brace-member 27; the back20 is formed with ttpper and lower hinged tongues 28, 29 corresponding with one vertical half of the aforesaid tongue 14, 15 and the memher'27 is formed with a verttcal'hinged lockiu' section 30 substantially correspondin 'wi i one of the aforesaid sections 22 and aving on its ends tongues 31 to-receive the slots 32 in the said ton 'ues 28, 29. In the construction shown in igs. 5 and 0, the ton ues 28,'
29 cooperate with the section 30 to ock the brace-member 27 in operative position, whereas in a similar manner the tongues 14 15 in the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, cooperate with the sections 22 of two brace-members to lock bothof'thein in 0perative position. It is obvious, however, thatin the use of the structure shown in Figs. 1 and 2, either braee-member 12 may 'sectton may the card 1 0 while theother brace-member 12 is in 1use,,should it be desired to so employ thefeasel. When the easel is used on light.- weig ht'cards one of the tongues in the backbe allowed to remain out of use and theother tongue relied on to engage the locking sect-ion formed in the bracemember and lock said member in operative position.-
- \Vhat'I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. An easel comprisin r a back-section to be secured to a card or the like and a bracemember connected along a weakened line to the vertical edge of said section, said back-section having therein a lockingtongue connected therewith along a horizontal hinge-line so as to be turned outwardly from said section and said tongue having a transverse slot, and said hraecmember having intcgral therewith adjacent to said back-section a vertical locking-section connected thereto along a vertical hinge-line so as to be turned outwardly at an angle to said brace-member, said lockingsection having on its end a tongue to enter the said slot in said locking-tongue connctt ed with said back-section.
2. An easel comprising a lmcl(sccti(m to be secured to a card or the like and a bracemember connected along a weakened line to the vertical edge of said section, said backsection having therein upper and lower locking tongues provided with transverse slots and connected to said section along horizontal hingelines so as to he turned outwardly in opposite directions from said section, and said brace-member having nucgriil therewith adjacent to said back-section a vertical lockin -section connected thereto along a vertical-hmge-line so as to he turned outwardly atan an le to said brace-member said locking-section having on its upper an lower ends tongues to enter said Sl(ll.\ in said locking-tongues connected with said back-section.
