IMPROVEMENT IN FASTENINGS FOR PAPER COLLARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,854, dated July v31, 1866.

Beit known that I, S. HODGINS, ot'St.Louis,
l in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Gollar-Fastening; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the sa me, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a front view of my invention applied to a gentlemans collar. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken on the plane of the linem, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is amodificaton of my invention.

My invention consists in the employment of a piece of rubber or other elastic fabric or material having a button-hole in one end and a metallic hook at its other end, the latter to be hooked into the front of the band of the collar, one for each side, and the button-hole being intended to be placed over the usual button or stud affixed to the neck-band of the shirt. l

In one end of each piece C a slit is cut, which constitutes a button-hole, and is in* tended to be placed over the button a in the shirt-band for securing the same thereto. The other end of each elastic C carries a lnetallic plate, D, which has a bifurcated end, the forks or prongs c being thrust through the elastic C, and bent vdown so as to secure the plate thereto, and the other end of the plate D is bent over so as to form a hook, d, which hook is to collars. In the irst place there will be no danger of tearing out the button-holes, which often occurs, even with the cloth-lined collars,
`when putting them on. In the -second place the collar, though of the right size, is often uncomfortable at certain times by reason of the rigid manner inwwhich it encircle-s the neck. With my invention both these` objections are set aside, there being no danger oi' tearing out the button holes, and the elastic will give or stretch a little, so as to make the collar set easily and tit the neck snugly without any liability of its chang the neck.
The fastening can be used for quite a long time. rIhe mode of fastening it to the collar is so quickly performed as to make it desirable on that account, and the comfort they will afford to the neck, for even a single day, recommends them as useful articles.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An elastic strip provided with one or more button-holes and one or more hooks, When arranged in relation to a paper collar substantially as described.
