UNITED STATES PATENT OFFI E.
EDWARD J. STELLWAGEN, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
COLLAR-BUTTON AND NECKTIE-HOLDER.
EBPECIFICA'I'ION forming part of Letters Patent No.31'7,239, dated May 5, 1885.
Application filed March 13,1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD J. STELLWA- GEN,Of Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented an Improved Collar-Button and Necktie-Holder, of which the following is a specification.
My button is designed specially to be used at the back of the neck, and is intended to prevent the necktie from slipping up when standing collars are worn.
I am aware that heretofore various devices for this purpose have been designed. For instance, it has been proposed to make collarbuttons with an arm extending upward from the outer disk or head, and having its upper portion bent so as to form a hook, as. shown in patent of Sea-bury, No. 280,246, which is a good illustration of the buttons of that class. The bend of the arm, however, being broad, makes the button difficult of insertion through the button-hole, and renders it necessary to insert the button in a peculiar manner. I am also aware that it has been proposed to make collar-buttons with hooks secured to the head of the button, and extending over the face thereof in a plane substantially parallel with the face, for the purpose of holding down the necktie or scarf at the front, as shown in the patent of W. J. Dunn, No. 311,88l,which appears to be the best illustration of buttons of that class. I am also aware that'buttons having a bulb or globular head have been formed with a slot cut in the head for the purpose of holding the retaining-cord or elastic of an ordinary butterfly-bow, as shown, for instance, in the patent of WV. E. Simonds, No. 103,098. I am also aware that as'eparablebutton formed with a flat shank and having a sharp-pointed hook for holding the necktie is old, as shown, for instance, in the patent of Homer dtViancourt, No. 306,487. I do not, therefore, claim any subjects-matter above mentioned. The peculiarities of my structure are fully set forth below.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view; Fig. 2, a view looking at the outer disk, and Fig. 3 asection through the shank of the button.
The ordinary disks, a b, are rigidly united by a flat shank, c. The outer disk, b, may be circular or elliptical in shape. It has attached to ita flat thin arm, (I, so related to the. disk that the arm and disk converge at the periphery of the disk at an acute angle, at which point the two are united. The edge of the disk at the point of junction with the holder-plate d is but a trifle thicker than elsewhere, and may be readily passed through a button-hole. The holder-plate (1 may be made of any desired width, and is preferably somewhat shorter than the width of the button. The disk and its attached holder-plate will pass through a button-hole with about the same facility that the disk alone will, and the construction is such that the thickness of this head of the button, including the disk and plate, is reduced to a minimuma matter of considerable consequence, as very longshanked or thick-disked buttons are liable to cause uncomfortable pressure upon the back of the neck.
The plate and disk may be struck up from one piece of metal; or the plate may be formed separate, as is well understood.
The necktie is simply slipped under the holder-plate d, and as the greatest length of the plate is at right angles with the greatest width of the fiat shank, the shank prevents the button from turning and permitting the necktie to escape. WVhen the outer disk, I), is made elliptical, its greatest length will be parallel with the plate (I, in which case the necktie will lie straighter around the collar, as the holder-plate d will not hold it down so low.
It is obvious that t11e-gist of this invention consists in so relating and joining the disk and holder-plate that the two may be readily in sert-ed edgewise through a button-hole in the ordinary way.
I claim as my invention- 1. A collar-button having attached to its outer disk a plate or arm for holding the necktie, the disk and arm being connected substantially as shown, to form an acute angle at their junction, whereby said disk may be passed edgewise through an ordinary buttonhole.
2. The combination of the inner and outer disks, the flat shank, and an arm or plate for holding the necktie secured to the outer disk, substantially as shown, whereby the disk and arm form an acute angle at their point of junction.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name.
' EDW'ARD J. STELLWAGEN.
