UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VALTER B. KAUFFMANN, OF DETROIT, MICHGAN.
NECKTlE-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 339,896, dated April 13, 1886.
Application filed February 4, 1886. Serial No, 190,780. (No model.)
T0 @ZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that l, XVALTER B. KAUFE- MANN, of Detroit, in the county of \Vayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Necktie-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and novel improvements in neckties; and the iuvention consists in the peculiar construction of and means employed for securing the loop by means of which the tie is secured to the collar-button, all as more fully hereinafter set y forth.
Neckties that are designed to be worn with turn-down collars, sometimes called butterily ties, are provided with an elastic loop upon the back of the tie, such loop being designed to engage on the collar-button. rlhis loop has generally been sewed fast, and often breaks, having therefore to be replaced by a new loop several times before'the tie itself has worn out. The back being usually made of card-board, the sewingthrough it causes it to break and loose its stiffness, and thereby causing it to be thrown aside for the want of means to hold it in place upon the collar.
It is the object of this invention to provide a means for securing the loop, which can easily and quickly be removed and replaced by a new one without liability of breaking or max-ring the back.
Figure 1 is an enlarged perspective of my improved device detached from the necktie. Fig. 2 is a view showing the manner of applying it to the back of a necktie. Fig. 3 is a central cross-section.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A represents the shield or back of a necktie, such as are especially designed to be worn with turn-down collars. Near the lower edge of this shield is formed an eyelet, which may be re-enforced with a metallic eyelet, if desired.
B is a staple provided, preferably, with a round head, b, and two tangs, c, of soft metal that can be readily bent. In the inner face of the head b is formed a groove or channel, d, toreceive an elastic loop, C, so that when secured upon the back such rubber or elastic loop will not be out by the edges ofthe head.
'lo attach the loop to the back of the tie, the loop is irst placed in the groove d, the tangs are then inserted through the eyelet in the 'shield from the opposite side to which the tie is secured, and the tangs are then bent so as to secure the loop in place, as shown in Fig. 2, leaving-the loop free to be buttoned upon the collar-button.
By the employment of a device of this character it will readily be seen that should the loop break it can easily be replaced by a new one without in the least injuring the shield of the tie.
W'hat I claim as my invention is- A device for attaching elastic loops to neckties, consisting of a staple provided with a head in which is formed on :its inner face a groove for the reception of the loop, and tangs for securing such head to the shield, substantiallyr as described.
VALTER B. KAUFFMANN.
