Description

UNITED YSTATES PATENT OEEIcE.4
NATHAN H. BALDWIN, OF LAOONIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ROBERI` M. APPLETON, OF LAKE VILLAGE, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
` NECKTlE-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 270,173, dated January 2, 1883.
` Appntation ined March 31,1882. (No model.)-
To all whom it mctyconcem: i
Be it known that I, NATHAN H. BALDWIN,
of' Laconia,` in the county of Belknap and State ot` New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners for Neckties and Scarfs, of which the fol-l lowing is a specification.
Grentleinensv scarfs as nowY used have a large narrow band which goes round the neck,
1o and which is fastened at the front, below the scarf, to a `fastening device ot' the shield ot1 the same, while ties, bows, &c., are provided with an elastic loop, which is applied to the front button of the neckband. The neckbands i 5 ofthe scart's-are troublesome inuse, while the elastic loops are soon worn out or broken, so that the ties or bows drop olf the collar and require to he provided with new loops.
` The object ot' this invention is to furnish an zo improved fastener for neckwear of all kinds by which the scarf, bow, or tie can be quickly placed in position and securely retained in position without getting out of order or wearing out; and the invention consists of a fastener for neckwear ot' peculiar construction, as here inat'ter described .and claimed. y
ln the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents ,a fastener' shown as removed from y the scarf or other article 'of neckwear and` applied to the neckband of a shirt.- Fig. 2 is a rear view of a scarf with my improved fastener attached, and Figs. 3 and 4 are detail side and top views of the fastener detached.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre- 3 5,4 spondin g parts.
Adesignates my improved fastener for neckwear of all kinds, which is made of brass, steel, or other wire of suitable thickness, or of any other material, and bent at its middle portion into'the shape of a loop, a, whereby it is 4o attached to the shield of the scarf or bow, or to the body'f the tie or bow.
From the center loop, a, extend in opposite directions slightly-curved arms b, the ends of which are bent so as to form eyes d, which prevent any injury of the arms to the neck of the wearer. The loop a is arranged at such an angle of inclination to the curved arms b that when the latter are placed over the neckband ofthe shirt or over the neckbands of the 5o shirt and collar together they spring vunder the band and away from the neck without any possibility ot' pressing on or injuring theneck. By thus inserting the curved arms b ofthe fastenerover the neckband ot' the shirt and 55 collar bands the scarf, bow, or tie is quickly placed in position and retained on the shirt without theleast inconvenience. Scaris, bows, orties provided with this fastener may also be used directly on'the neckband ot the shirt 6o Without using any collar, which is convenient during the summer season. Y
Havingthus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A Wire fastener for neckwear consisting of a central dowuwardly-projecting attachingloop, adapted to be applied to the scarf, and laterally-'projecting spring-arms adapted to overlap the neckband and spring outward against the inner face of the shirt-iront when 7o in use, substantially as described.
1n testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence ot'rtwo subscribing witnesses.
