NECKTIE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 15, 1910.
Application filed August 20, 1909. Serial No. 513,732.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES REYNOLDS, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Neckties, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to neckties and particularly to what are known as four-in-hand ties, and still more particularly to what are known as made up four-in-hand ties; and the objectthereof is to provide a tie of this class which is composed of separate parts and may be made in the form of a shield tie or a neck band tie and which, by reason of the fact that it is made up of separate parts, may be more cheaply manufactured than other ties of its class; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in a tie or ties of the class specified constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a front view of a shield fourin-hand tie made according to my invention. Fig. 2. a back view of the top portion thereof. Fig. 3. a front View showing one step in the method of making the tie shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 4. a View similar to Fig. 8 but showing another step in the process of making the tie. Fig. 5. a view similar to Figs. 3 and at but indicating the final step in the process of making the tie. Fig. 6. a plan view of the shield on which the tie shown in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive is made. Fig. 7. a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing my improved tie made up in the form of a neck band tie. Fig. 8. a View similar to Fig. 3 but showing one step of the process of making the tie shown in Fig. 7, and Fig. 9. a view similar to Fig. 4 but showing another step in the process of making the tie shown in Fig. 1.
In the practice of my invention, as shown in Figs. 1 to 6 inclusive, I provide a shield at which is of the usual general form and composed of side wings a and a central downwardly directed projection a. The shield a is covered with the material from which the tie is made, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 and I also provide two separate strips 7) and c of any suitable material from which the tie proper is made. The strip I), in practice, is made longer than the strip 0 and the end 6' thereof is preferably reduced in width. The end 0 of the strip 0 is also preferably reduced in width and said end 0 of the strip 0, is secured to the back of the shield a. The strip 6 is also secured to the back of the shield a transversely thereof and obliquely thereto as indicated in Fig. 3 and the end portion 72 projects below said shield a predetermined distance as clearly shown in said figure, and obliquely to the strip 0. At this stage of the procedure the collar button engaging hook device (1, is secured to the back of the head 6 of the tie in the usual manner, said device being composed of spring wire and parts (Z thereof. being passed through the strips b and c and through the tongue at of the shield ta as clearly shown in Fig. 3. This collar button engaging device d, however, is the same as other devices of this class and forms no part in my invention. After the strips b and 0 have been connected with the shield a as described, the head or knot c of the tie is formed by folding the dmvnwardly directed portion If of the strip 7) around the upper end portion 0' of the strip 0, as shown at 7) in Fig. 4, said part I) being carried around in front of the upper part c of the strip a and then passed backwardly and around the back of said part c and under or back of the tongue a of the shield a, after which the end of the part b of the strip 1) is brought up in front of the end portion c of the strip 0 and secured thereto and to the shield as shown at I) in Fig. 1, and this produces the result shown in Fig. 5 and forms the transverse front loop membcrc of the knot or head 0 of the tie. In order to complete the tie the longer end I) of the strip 7) is passed downwardly through the loop member 0 of the knot or head of the tie and is pulled downwardly into position as shown in Fig. 1, and the tie is complete.
In the construction shown in Figs. 7 to 9 inclusive my improved tie is made up in the form of a neck band tie and in this operation I substitute for the shield a a neck band member f to the central portions of which the strips 6 and c are secured, the strip 6 being secured to the back of the band f transversely thereof and obliquely thereto so that the end portion 5 projects clownwardly therefrom, and the end portion 0 of the strip 0 being secured to and transversely of the front of the band f as clearly indicated at Fig. 8. After the parts 6, 0 and f have been connected as described the knot or head 9 of the tie shown in Fig. 7 is formed as shown in Fig. 9, the end portion 6 of the strip 6 being passed around the top portion 0 of the strip 0 and brought forward and secured to the top of the end portion 0 of the strip 0 and to the band f at 03 as shown in Fig. 4, after which the longer end portion of the strip Z) is passed downwardly through the loop or band 0 the same as in Fig. l to form the complete tie shown in Fig. 7. This form of tie is par ticularly designed for use in standing collars and the ends of the bands f may be connected at the back of the neck as shown at f by any suitable fastening device f and The shield 64 constitutes the neck band, or collar member in the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, and a tie made in this manner is particularly designed for use in connection with turn down collars, while in the construction shown in Figs. 7 to 9 inclusi've the band f constitutes the neck band member and it will be seen that these two parts constitute the only difiierence between the separate parts herein shown and described.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is A made-up four-inhand tie composed of a neck member and two separate strips of flexible material connected therewith, the end of one of said strips being connected with the neck member and the other strip being connected with said neck member and ranging transversely thereof so as to divide said strip into two projecting parts one of which is longer than the other and both of which are used in forming the knot or head of the tie.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 19th day of August 1909.
CHARLES REYNOLDS.
