Description

(No Modem" K COMBINED COLLAR STUD AND GRVAT HOLDER" No. 292,517', i Patented Jan. 29,1834.,
UNITED STATI-3s' PATIENT FIIcI-i.
E. sMITH sTnAIT, or TROY, Nnw YORK.
COMBINED COLLAR-STUD AND CRAVAT-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters `:Patent No. 292,517,`dated January 29, 1884. Application filed June 30, 1883. (Xo model.)
To a/ZZ whom, t may concern:
Be it vknown that l, E. SMITH STRAIT, of
the cityof Troy, county of Rensselaer, and
State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Collar-Studs and Cravat-Holders, of which the following isa specification.
' My invention relates to an attachment to that class of articles known as collar-studs,77 and which in the main are used to connect collars to the neckbands of shirts. These collar-studs or button-studs,77 as they are 'sometimes called, are made to have a flat shoe and a head, which are intermediately connected by a shank that is variously Inodied in form.
My invention consists, as will be more fully detailed hereinafter, in the combination, with `the head of a collar-stud, of a downwardlyprojected spur, arranged so that said spur will hook into the cravat in the inside facing ofthe latter, where nearest the neck of the wearer, to thus hold the cravat in place and prevent its working up.
Accompanying this specification, and forming a part of it, isa sheet of drawings containing three iigures illustrating my invention, and in all of which gures the same designation of parts by letter-reference is used.
Figure 1 shows a perspective of a collar-stud containing my inventionkin which the head is hinged to the connecting-shank, so as to be turned u p edgewise thereon. Fig. 2 illustrates, in a cross-vertical section, the collar-stud shown at Fig. 1. Fig. 3.shows a perspective of the same device shown in Figs. l and 2, with the outer button turned up edgewise on its hinged connection made with the shank.
. and D the shank connecting said head and- The several parts of the device thusillustrated are designated by letter-reference, and their function explained as follows:.
AThe letter B indicates thehead; B2, the shoe,
shoe. y
The letter S indicates a spur that is downfunction of this spur is to engage with the cravat when worn, so as to hook into or onto the latter to keep it in place, and thus prevent its working up on the neck of the wearer.
To adapt my invention to a collar-stud having its head hinged at H to the connecting-bar, the head is pierced and an opening, O, made therein for the passage of the spur, and the latter is attached tothe shank, as shown at Figs. 1, 2, and 3, itY being intended that the part of the spur projecting through the aperture in the head shall perform the desired function.
The shank D is preferably made to have fiat sides to adapt it to the button-hole in which it is worn, and the spur is preferably applied to project downwardly in a position to be opposite one of the flat sides of the shank.`
When a collar-stud containing my invention is used, it is applied in the usual manner to connect the collar with the shirt neckband. The cravat or tie is then put on and'adj usted in a position to suit the wearer, with the spur hooked into or onto the tie or cravat as placed, where the latter is firmly held and secured by the connection thus made, and in such amanner as to prevent working up from the Inovement of the neck.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
In a collar-stud, the combination, with the rshoe, shank, and ahinged head formed or provided withza'fperforation, of a spur or prong attached to the shank and adapted to enter the perforation in the head, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.-
Signed at the city of Troy this 28th day of June, 1883in the presence of two witnesses.
E. SMITH STRAIT.
