Beit known that I, GEORGE W. Gnovnn., a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Combined Toilet-Oase and Brush,of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to that class of toiletcases wherein the back of a hair-brush is provided with a comb-receptacle having a movable cover. In all prior devices of this character the construction is more or less complicated, crude, and unwieldy, and the appearance of the article is materially altered from the general appearance of an ordinary hairbrush having a handle.

The chief object of my present invention is to simplify toilet-cases of the character referred to and to provide a new and improved toilet-case wherein a hair-brush contains a comb receptacle covered by a slide which moves longitudinally of the case and forms a part of the brush-handle.

The invention also has for its object to provide a novel and simple con struction wherein a slide is employed to cover and uncover a comb-receptacle in the back and handle of a brush Without in any manner detractin g from the symmetrical appearance of the brush or marring the nice, smooth, rounded surfaces of the brush-back and handle.

The invention also has for its object to provide a new construction wherein a longitudinally-movable slide is perfectly flush with the outer surface of the brush-back and handle, and a smooth, neat,attractive,and ornamental article is secured which is free from projections and has almost, if not precisely, the appearance of an ordinary hair-brush provided with a handle.

To accomplish all these objects, my invention consists, essentially, in a toilet-case composed of a hair-brush having a bach formed with a handle, dovetailed shoulders formed in and located below the plane of said back and the handle and extending longitudinally along the same, a comb-receptacle depressed below the dovetailed shoulders and formed partly in the back and partly in the handle, and a slide engaging the shoulders hush with the back and handle and slidable longitudi- 2 is a longitudinal central sectional view showing the slide in its closed position; and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View taken on the line 3 3, Fig. 2.

In order to enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, l will now describe the same in detail, referring to the drawings, wherein it will-be observed that the toilet-case is composed of a hair-brush made of any suitable bristles l, extending from a brush-back 2, which is formed integral with an ornamental handle 4. The contour of the brush -back and handle are only typical of many different forms which maybe employed, but the handle 4 must extend longitudinally from the brush-back.

The brush-back and handle are constructed with two longitudinal shoulders 5, undercut for the purpose of providing` dovetailed edges. These dovetailed shoulders 5 extend longitudinally along the back to the extreme end of the handle et, and near the outer end portion of the brush-back the shoulders are connected by a transverse shoulder 6 of the same depth as the dovetailed shoulders. The space between the dovetailed shoulders is formed into a longitudinal comb-receptacle 7, which eX- tends from near the outer end of the brushbaclz to the eXtreme end of the handle, so that a full-length comb can lie longitudinally in the receptacle below the dovetailed shoulders 5. The comb-receptacle is adapted to be covered and uncovered through the medium of a slide 8, composed of a substantially iiat plate having beveled or dovetailed longitudinal edges to engage the undercut or dovetailed edges of the shoulders 5. The slide S is coeXtensive with the length oi the doven tailed shoulders 5, and when slid into its closed position the slide entirely covers the comb-receptacle and perfectly conceals the roo comb as Well as the dove-tailed parts of the shoulders from view, thereby giving the hairbrush a symmetrical appearance, and not in any manner marring the nice, smooth, rounded surfaces of the brush-back and handle. The outer surface of the slide is flush With the outer surface of the brush-back and handle, and, consequently, when the slide is closed, the hair-brush has exactly, or almost exactly, the same appearance to the eye as an ordinary hair-brush of the same general contour. The slide may be moved longitudinally by simply pressing upon its outer surface with a inger or thumb and moving the finger or thumb in the direction necessary to withdraw the slide; but, preferably, I pro- Vide the outer end of the slide with a fingern nail notch 9, so that the nail of the linger or thumb can be engaged with the notch to more conveniently withdraw the slide when it is desired to use the comb.

The brush-back and the handle are preferably made of a single piece of wood, but obviously they may be made of any other mate* rial ordinarily used in the manufacture of hair-brushes. The slide is also preferably made of Wood, but it may also be made of any other material.

Many hair-brushes have their backs and handles composed of pyroxylin material, and my improved construction does not prevent the use of this material in the construction of the brush-back, the handle, and the slide.

By constructing the slide so that it moves longitudinally to uncover the comb-receptacle and making the slide perfectly hush with the outer surface of the brush-back and handle a neat, smooth, attractive, and ornamental article is secured which is entirely free from projections and can be made the exact counterpart of an ordinary hair-brush provided With a handle. It is very desirable to provide a toilet-case of the character described wherein the outer surfaces of the brush-back and handle present a perfectly iush, nice, smooth, and ornamental appearance, free from projections, and of the general symmetrical contour of an ordinary hairbrush. This result is attained by my construction, and a very economical article is produced which possesses the advantages of a comb-receptacle housed in the brush-back and handle and concealed from view, when not in use, by a slide which forms a part of the brush-back and the brush-handle.

The bottom of the comb-receptacle 7 is supplied With a reflecting-surface to provide a mirror which can be utilized by a person in combing the hair. This reflecting-surface may be an ordinary mirror shaped to tit into the comb-receptacle and constituting the bottom wall thereof, whereby it will be entirely concealed from view and protected when the slide is in its closed position.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A toilet-case, consisting of a hair-brush having a back formed with a handle, dovetailed shoulders extending longitudinally along the handle and back, a comb-receptacle located below the dovetailed shoulders and formed partly in the handle and partly in the back, and a slide formed of the same material as the brush-back and handle, engaging the dovetailed shoulders ush with the outer surface of the handle and back and slidable longitudinally alongv the said handle and back to cover and uncover the combreceptacle, substantially as shown and described.

2. A toilet-case, consisting of a hair-brush having a back formed with a handle, `dovetailed shoulders formed in and located below the plane of said back and handle and extending longitudinally along the same, a comb-receptacle depressed below the dovetailed shoulders partly in the back and partly in the handle and having its bottom wall composed of a mirror, and a slide engaging the dovetailed shoulders iiush with the back and handle and slidable longitudinally to uncoverl the comb-receptacle.
