UNITED STATES GEORGE IV. GLOVER,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HAIR-BRUSH.
SFECIFICA'IION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 580,270, dated April 6, 1897.
A li ti fil d December 1, 1896. Serial No. 614,109. (No model.)
T all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. GLOVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Military Hair Brushes, of which the following is a specificatifin.
My present invention relates to improvements in hair-brushes of the class known as military hair-brushes, which are not provided with handles for economy of space. These hair-brushes may, by reason of the little space they occupy, be easily carried by a traveler in a grip or valise, and this is quite an advantage, as many persons prefer to use their own hair-brushes rather than depend upon those of a hotel or other resort.
My invention has for its object to provide a hair-brush of this class having in its back a receptacle for a comb and a slidable coverpiece fitting the edges of the receptacle to cover the same and confine the comb and which will not in any manner detract from the neat and smooth appearance of the article and will not mar the nice rounded surface of the brush-back.
To this end the invention consists in the novel features of construction herein set forth and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a military hair-brush embodying myinvention, the sliding cover being closed to confine the comb in its receptacle, and illustrating the ordinary appearance of the brush when not in use. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the sliding cover being partly withdrawn exposing the comb in its receptacle and from which when the slide is in this position the comb may be withdrawn for use. Fig. 3 is a plan View showin g the brush and the sliding cover separated, and Fig. 4=is a transverse section of the brushback and cover. Fig. 5 is a detail showing the means for securing the sliding receptaclecover in place.
In the said drawings the reference numeral 1 indicates the brush-back, which is of the military kind. In other words, it is without a handle and is elliptical or round in plan view. The brush is provided with bristles 2,
as usual, and aflixed in any known manner. In the top of the brush-back I provide a recess or receptacle 3 by hollowing the same out. This receptacle is adapted to contain a suitable comb 4, as shown in the drawings.
The side Walls 5 and one end wall 5 of the receptacle 3 are undercut for the purpose of providing a continuous groove 6. below the top surface of the brush-back. At the opposite end the material of the brush-back is cut away between the side walls 5 of the receptacle 3 from the edge of the end wall of said receptacle to the edge of the brush-back and to a plane in line with the base-line of the continuous groove 6 to provide an entrance-way for the sliding cover 7. Said cover is beveled, as at S, continuously along its two side edges and one end to provide a tongue to fit the continuous groove 6 of the brush-back, whereby said cover is guided in its movement and, when in place to cover the receptacle 4, is held against upward displacement.
By cutting away the material at one end of the brush-back, as at 10, a passage-way is afforded through which the sliding cover is moved in opening and closing the receptacle. At the end of the brush-back opposite the cut-away portion 10 I secure a small springfinger 11, which projects in the path of the under side of the sliding cover, and when said cover is in closed position the spring-finger engages a seat 14, provided therefor in the under side of said cover and retains said cover firmly in closed position. The arrangement of this spring-finger is such that it is concealed from view when the cover is closed, and thus does not mar the neat outward appearance of the brush.
The surfaces of the brush-back and of the sliding cover are perfectly fiush, and the end of the cover 12 is rounded in conformity with the configuration of the brush-back.
The brush-back and the comb-receptacle cover may be of wood or of any suitable composition, and the fioor of the comb-receptacle may be provided with a mirror 13.
The completed article presents a very useful military hair-brush having a receptacle to receive a comb and a sliding cover for the receptacle, all so arranged that the neat symmetrical appearance, which is very desirable in such articles, is not departed from.
It is evident that within the scope of my invention the receptacle may extend from side to side of the brush and the sliding cover be correspondingly movable from side to side of the brush instead of longitudinal thereof, as shown in the drawings.
A brush constructed in accordance with this invention takes up but very little space and can be conveniently carried by a traveler in his grip or satchel, so that he may not be compelled to use the brushes supplied by hotels, &c.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- The herein-described military brush, consisting of a handleless brush-back hollowed out to provide a comb-receptacle in its top portion, the side walls and one end wall of said receptacle being undercut to provide a continuous groove 6 below the top surface of the brush-back, the opposite end of the brushback being cut away between the side walls 5 of the receptacle 3 from the edge of the end wall of said receptacle to the edge of the brushback and to a plane in line with the base of the continuous groove 6, a sliding cover 7.
adapted to enter and be removed from the brush-back through the. passage-Way provided by the cut-away portion of the brushback, said cover being beveled as at 8, continuously along its two side edges and one end to provide a tongue to fit the continuous groove 6 of the brush-back, a spring-finger secured to the brush-back at the end opposite IIQSSGS.
