No. 840,435. I
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 1,1907.
Application filed June 28,1906. Serial No. sga'sn.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, QHARLES EDWIN CON- DER, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new f' and useful Improvements 1m Backs for Brushes; and -I do declare .the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art/to which it appertains to make and use the same. 7
This invention relates to improvements in backs for brushes.
Y The object of the invention is to construct a brush-back provided with suitable recesses or compartments adapted to receive various toilet accessories or other implements, and a cover adapted to close said compartments.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter de- Fig.
' contain a blackening-box '5, and at the oppo, site end of the back or body 1 is formed a recess or compartment 6, in which is arranged} a removable cup 7, adapted to receive the' scribed and claimed. In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is, a side view of a brush having a back constructed in accordance with the invention and showing the latter in closed position. 2 is a perspective view of the brush, showing the back open. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section through the same; and Fig. 4 is a similar view to Fig. 1, showing amodified arrangement of the back.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 1, 2,
and 3 of the drawings, in which is shown a blackening or polishing brush, 1 denotes the back or body portion of the brush, to which is attached a strip of sheepskin or other woolen material 2, betweenrwhich and the lower side of the backu's arranged a pad 3 formed of felt or other yielding material. In the back or body portion 1 is formed a cylindrical recess or compartment 4, adapted to head of a blackening -applying brush or dauber 8, the handle of which is adapted to lie in a longitudinally-disposed recess 9,-
formed in the body 1 between the recesses 4 .and 6. Hingedly connected to the body 1 is 'a cover 10, said cover being provided on its inner side with recesses 12 and 13, which are connected by a longitudinal recess 14. The recesses. 12, 13, and Marc adapted to coincide with the recesses 4,6, and 9 when the cover is in a closed position, thus forming a part of the latter recesses and provldmg compartments for the blackening box and dauber,
which when said cover is closed are entirely concealed and will be in convenient position for use when desired. The arrangement and formation of the cover is such that when the same is closed upon the body portion 1 the brush will present the appearance of a'brush of the ordinary construction. The "cover when in closed position is adapted to be held shut by any suitable means, said means being here shown as? consisting of u wardlyprojecting spring-metal pins 15,. w ich are adapted to be engaged with apertures 16,
formed in the adjacent face of the cover. By-
providing a removable receptacle or cup 7 for the head of the dauber said cup may be taken out and cleaned when desired.
In Figs. 1, 2, and 3 of the drawings is shown a blackening 'or polishing brush the back of which is rovided with suitable compartments for ho ding certain implements or accessories for use in connection with polishingbrushes., back may be provided with other forms of and differently-arranged compartments for receiving thevarious implements and accessories adapted for use with variousstyles of brushes. One variety or modified form of It is obvious, however, that the back is indicated in Fig. 4 of the drawings, in
which is shown a hairbrush 17, the back 18 of which is providedwith a comb-receiving compartment 19 and a. curling-iron compartment 20, in which are adapted to be placed a comb 21 and a curling-iron when the same are not in use, thus providing a convenient holder-or .receptacle for these articles' In 7 addition to the compartments 19 and 20 the ICC tion will be readily understood without re- I quiring 'a more extended explanation.
Variousiplianges in the form, and the minor details of-construct1on may be resortedto without departing fromthe prinhingedly connecte tion and adapted to partments, said cover having means for reciple or sacrificing any of theadvantages' of invention as defined by the appended c aims.
Having thus described my invention, What claim as new, and des e to secure by Let ters Patent, is' J '1. A brush-back comprising a body portion having formed therein a series of implement receivin compartments, a cover 1 to said back or body por-.
be closed over said comtainingarticles disposed within saidcompartments in position and means for.retain-.
ingsaidcover in a closed position.-
2. A brush-backcomprising a body p01 tion having a series of shaped recesses formmg implement -rece1v1ng compartments, a
proportion,
prisin m a b means for locking said cover in closed position. 3. A blackening or polishi-n brushcoma body portionhaving ormed thereackening-box compartment, a dauberhead partment communicating with the aforesaid compartments, a removable cup or receptacle' arranged in said dauber-hea'd compartment, a cover hingedly connected to one side of said back or body portion, said cover having formed therein recesses adapted to aline With the compartments in said ody portion compartment, a dauber-handle com- When the cover-is in a closed position to hold the articles against movement, and. means to said body portion, substantial y as described In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of tvvo subscribing Wits nesses v v v I CHARLES EDWIN QONDER.
