Description

BRUSH.
APPLIGATION FILED MAR.5,1908.

WITNESSES A TTOHNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARVEY W. HASOY, OF HEMPSTEAD, NEW YORK.
BRUSH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 10, 1909.
Application filed March 5, 1908. Serial No. 419,285.
the ferrule and prevent them from becoming loosened through the action of moisture or otherwise. t
My invention will be fully described here inafter and the features of novelty will be pointed out in the appendedclaims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a face View, with parts in section of my improved brush; Fig. 2 is a detail view of the bristle carrier with the bristles therein before being cemented and trimmed. Fig. 3 is a sectional view thereof on line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the carrier and bristles ready to be placed in position in the ferrule, and Fig. 5 is a sectional view of another form of my invention.
In my improved brush the bristles A extend through a carrier B made of wire fabric or similar foraminated material which car rier is then filled with an impervious or waterproof cement O of any suitable composition. This cement enters the meshes of the carrier B and also completely surrounds'the ends of the bristles A. This carrier B with the bristles secured thereon as just described is next secured in the usual ferrule D which in turn is fastened to the handle E by screws or nails F. The carrier is prevented from leaving the open end of the ferrule by the inturned portion D thereof, it being understood that the end of the handle E abuts against said carrier and prevents it from wabbling. In other words said carrier is securely held between the inturned portion D of the ferrule and the end of the handle E.
A brush constructed according to my invention is easy to manufacture and the bristles are securely held in position and are not liable to be loosened through the action of moisture or other elements.
Instead of making the carrier B in the form shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the drawings, the said carrier might consist simply of a flat piece of foraminated material 1) into which the ends of the bristles extend and in which they are fastened by cement in the manner shown in Fig. -5.
I claim:
1. A brush comprising a carrier having a foraminated bottom and foraminated side and end walls, bristles which extend through said carrier bottom into the space between said carrier Walls, a binder for securing said bristles in the carrier, a handle having its one end in engagement with the walls of the carrier and means for securing it thereto.
2. A brush comprising a carrier having a foraminated bottom and foraminated slde and end walls, bristles which extend through said carrier bottom into the space between .the carrier walls, a binder for securing said bristles in the carrier, a handle, and a ferrule which surrounds the side and end walls of the carrier and also engages the bottom thereof.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
