Description
A. HOPFEN. Shaving-Brush.
No. 206,791. Patented Aug. 6, 1878.
N. PETERS, FNOTO-LITHOGRAPNER WASPHNQTOM D O UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANTON HOPFEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHAVlNG-BRUSHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 206,791, dated August 6, 1878; application filel May 29, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTON HOPFEN, of New York, in the county and. State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Soap-Holder and Shaving-Brush; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a handle for shaving-brushes, which form a receptacle for the shaving-soap or other articles, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention; and Figs. 2, 3, 4, and 5 are detail views of parts of the same.
A represents a tube of metal or other suitable material to form the handle for the brush B. This brush is made, in the usual manner, of bristles attached to a head, 0, and this head is formed with a circumferential groove at a, as shown. Within the tube or handle A is a plate or disk, D, formed 011 two opposite sides with downwardly-projecting arms d d, in which are headed screws or pins 1) b, passing through longitudinaal slots at a: in the tubular handle A. The plate or disk D is also provided with two angular or curved spring-catches, F F, which project upward above the plate or disk, as shown. 'When the plate or disk D is moved outward as far as the pins or screws 1) in the slots at will permit, the springcatches F are thrown outward beyond the end of the tubular handle. The head 0 of the brush is then placed on the disk D, and as it is pressed inward into the handle the spring catches or jaws F F close, so that their ends or points will pass into the groove on of the head 0, and thus hold the brush firmly in the tubular handle.
In the longitudinal slots 00 of the tube or handle A are made side slots or recesses, y y,
at any desired points, to hold the brush firmly, more or less extended or projected from the handle, so as to make the brush either hard or soft.
It is, of course, understood that the farther the brush is projected from the handle the softer it will he in use, and hence the adjustability of the brush in the handle is of great importance.
The handle A is provided with an extension, F, which may be connected to the handle by screw-threads, as shown, or in any other suitable manner; or it may form a part of the handle, if so desired.
In this extension F is a sliding plate or disk, Gr, provided with spring-catches h 71, to catch into the stick or bar I of shaving-soap or other material and hold the same in place. The plate or disk G is provided with arms a n, in which are fastened headed screws or pins m m, and these screws or pins pass through longitudinal slots 2' tin the sides of the handle or extension F, so that the soap can be entirely concealed within said handle, or be moved outward, as necessity may require. There are also side notches, 13, extending from the slots 1', so that the soap may be held at any point desired.
In the practical manufacture of my invention it is evident that the brush may be permanently a-ffixed in a hollow handle at one end, and the remainder of the handle form the receptacle for the soap, to be moved out and in as required, and the mechanical devices for moving either the brush or soap may be changed ad Zibz'tum without in any way departing from the spirit of my invention.
Instead of soap, the handle may contain cosmetic, camphor-ice, or other toilet article, if desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A shaving-brush provided with a hollow handle, forming a receptacle for the shaving soap or other toilet article, as herein set forth.
2. A hollow handle provided at one end with a shaving-brush, and also provided with a sliding carrier having suitable devices con= nected thereto for holding or stick of shaving-soap or other toilet artiele, as herein In testimony that I claim the foregoing as set forth. my own I afiix my signature in presence of 3. The combination of a hollow handle, a two witnesses.
carrier for holding a sliding brush, and. a carrier for holding a sliding stick or bar of soap Witnesses:
or other toilet artiele, snhstnntiallv as herein \V. (I. MCARTHI'R,
set forth. I A. l. BABeocK.
ANTON HOPFEN.
