LEAD-PENCIL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 607,708, dated July 19, 1898.
Applicationifiled October 7, 1897. Serial No. 654,380. (Nb d m To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, GOTTHELF MARTIN SEI- DEL, of Easthampton, in the county of Hampshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Lead-Pencil, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. 7 r
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved lead-pencil arranged to hold different movable leads, any ofwhich can be readily projected and locked in place for immediate use.
The invention consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, formin g a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 3. Fig. 3vis a cross-section of the same on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the same on the line 4: 4 of Fig. 2.
The improved device illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4: is provided with a casing A, in one end of which is fitted an ordinary lead-pencil B, a rubber or other device, and in the other end of the said casing are formed longitudinal chambers or recesses 0, each adapted to contain a lead D, the several leads being preferably of diiferent color and of difierent degree of hardness, as desired by the user. The leads D are adapted to extend through a head E, held on this end of the casing A, so that one end of a lead projects beyond the head to allow of writing with this particular lead any desired matter.
Each lead D is adapted to be locked in place when in an outermost or innermost position,
by a suitable locking. device, which may be of various constructions. For instance, as shown in the figures referred to, I employ a slide F, fitted to slide on an inclined guideway E, formed in the head E, so that when the slide is moved outward its inner end presses against the leadD, so as to lock the same against movement in the casingA.
Now when it is desired to use one of the leads D the operator moves the corresponding slide F rearwardly to release the respective lead, and upon slightly tilting the casin g A this lead shoots out of its bearing and can be moved so as to project with its forward end .a'suitabledistance beyond'the head E, after as a tube, one end of which is open and adapted to receive an ordinary pencil, rubber or the like, and the other end being provided with a head having multiple openings therein, each adapted to accommodate a lead, said head having inclined guide-surfaces and slides moving on said guide-surfaces and adapted to lock or free the leads.
2. A lead-pencil, comprisinga tube forming a casing, a multiple-chambered lead-holder adapted to be held in the casing, a cap fitting over one end of the casing and having a conical ortaperingoutersurface, andlongitudinal slots therein corresponding to the lead-chambers in the holder, and lead-locking slides fitting in said slots.
3. A lead-pencil comprisinga casingformed with a series of longitudinal chambers each adapted to contain a lead, a head secured on the said casing, having guideways with inclined surfaces, and a slide on each guideway, adapted to engage a lead, to lock the same in place, substantially as shown and described.
