PEN-HOLDER..

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN; l
Be it known that I, C. M. H.' WARREN, `ot` Brooklyn, in the county ofKngs, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved SlidingPen-Holder, and that the following descriptionptaken 'in connection with the accompanying drawings, hereinafter referred to, forms a full and enact specification of the same, wherein I have set forth the-nature and principles of my said improvements, by which my invention may be distinguished from all others ot' a similar class, together with such parts as I claim, and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent. l K
This invention relates to a new and improved penholder, of that class in which the pen is allowed to slide, sothat its point may be protected in case of the dropping of the pen and holder upon the door. i
The object of the invention is to obtain a verysimple, economical, and portable pen-holder, which will 4 answerI equally as wellA as thc expensive telescopic holders now invcry general use. In the accompanying sheet of drawings?- Figure 1 is a side view of my invention yin an open or distended state.
Figure 2, a-longitudinal central section of the same, taken in the line :e az, iig. 1.
Figure 3, a view of the same in a closed state.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts. y
A represents the handle of the pen-holder, which may be of wood or other material, and Bis a metal barrel, which is fitted on the handle, and of suilicient diameter internally to admit of therhandle being moved freely into and ont from it, the handle having a pin or collar, a,- upon it, which, when the handle is drawn out to its fullest extent, comes in Contact with a collar, b, at the inner side of the rear end ofthe barrel, said pin or collar a, when the 'handle is shoved fully in the barrel, coming in contact with a collar,` a*, in the barrelat its front end` By this means the handle is prevented from being drawn fully out from 'the' barrel, so as to become detached from it,and also prevented from being shoved too far through it, ais will `be -fully understood by refer- 'ring to tig. 2. On the barrel B `there is fitted a slidingnosing, C, in'which 'the pen Dis fitted. This nosing receives the pen E, and it is allowed toslide freely on the barrel, and has snlhcent spring or elasticity to grasp l,the barrel and press upon the saine tightly enough toprevent casual movement. The nosing is encompassed at its inner end by a band, c, and at the inner end of a barrel there is ahead, d, which the band c of the nosing comes in contact with when the latter is shoved fully inward, and prevents -the nosing being shoved od from the barrel, andthe nosing is prevented from being shoved off from the front end ofthe barrel in consequence of the band c coming in contact with a projection, e, on the-exterior of'the barrel.
. By this arrangement the nosing and pen may he shoved entirely over or upon the barrel, and thc'handle also shoved within the latter, making the device extremely short or portable, equally so as the comparatively eirp'ensive extension-holders now in general use. This device may be manufactured at a very moderate cost,
not'greatly exceeding that of the ordinary sliding pen-holder,
Having thus described my invention7 I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-.-u y `A pen-holder, provided with a sliding handle and barrel B, and with a sliding nosing, C, all combined G. M. H. WARREN. i Witnesses:
WM. F. McNAMARA,
ALEX. F. ROBERTS.
