Letters Patent No. 67,528, dated August 6, 1867.
LEAD-HOLDER OR PENCIL.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, IETER GABRIEL, of Seymour, in the county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and improved Lead-Holder or Pencil; and I do hereby declare that thefollowing is a. t'ull, clear, and exact description thereof2 which will enable' others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had vto the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The present invention relates to an improved holder or case for pencileleads, of that class of leadswhich are continuous and of a length corresponding, or nearly so, to, that of the holder or case.
This holder or case is formed of two tubes, the one screwing into the other from end to end, and a plug or stem that, 4by a head attached thereto is screwed into one ofthe open ends of the outer tube, and from such end extends, through'the inner tube, for the whole, or nearly so, of its length. I n the inner tube the lead is placed, and, as it is worn away, is made to project therefrom by simply screwing the inner tube into the outer one, either more or less, as may be found necessary to bring or projectA the lead to the proper distance for being used, the said centre-stem or plug, as the inner tube is thus screwed into the outer tube, forcing out the lead therefrom in a corresponding degree. In the accompanying plate of drawings, my improved lead-holder or pencil is illustratedi Figure 1 being a central section through the same, in the direction of its lengthjand Figure 2, a cross-section in plane of the line z x, fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A and B, in the drawings, represent, respectively, the outer and inner tubes, constituting or forming a part of my improved lead-holder or pencil, the inner one of which screws into and through the outer one; C, a stem or plug having attached to it at one end a head or cap, D, that is screwed into one, E, of the open ends tothe outer tube, with the stem passing through or into the inner tube, or nearly so. In the inner tube the lead F is i placed. This lead, in length, is to correspond, or nearly so, to that of the tube B, and, when therein, is forced or made to project outward from the end F of the said tube by the plug or stem C, as the said tube is screwed into the outer tube or case A, as is obvious, the length to which the said lead is thus made to project being in direct proportion to the length of the stem C and the distance the inner tube is screwed into the outer tube r or case.
` By means of a holder or case for a lead, constructed as above described, a continuous lead, as it were, is secured, from the fact that, as it wears away, it can be forced out and made to project sufficiently for use by simply turning the inner tube so that it will screw into the outer tube or case. I
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination ot' the outerand inner tubes A and B, respectively, and stationarycentre-stem or plug C, substantially as and for the purpose described.
'PETER GABRIEL.
