SEAM FOR SHEET-METAL ARTICLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 566,647, dated August 25, 1896.
Application filed May '7, 1896. Serial No. 590,589 (No model.)
To 6023 whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAVUS F. BAUMAN, of Louisville, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Seam for Sheet-Metal Articles, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide sheet-metal articles, such as stovepipes, with a new and improved seam which is simple and durable and is arranged to permit the operator to readily close the sides of the article, so that the seam is not exposed to the heat passing through the article.
The invention consists principally of an eX- ternal longitudinal closing-seam terminating near the end of the article in a lock-seam to lock the sides in position.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the im provement with parts broken out. Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan View of the improvement, and Fig. 3 is a perspective front view of the same with part broken out.
Along the adjacent edges of the sheet A are formed the members B and O of the scam, the member B being bent upon itself on the outside of the sheet to form a recess D, which opens toward the other member O. The latter is slightly raised or set off from the sheet A, and is adapted to pass into the said recess D. The end of the member 0 is formed with an inwardly and backwardly turned flange O, adapted to engage a longitudinal slot B, formed in the inner portion of the member B, as plainly illustrated in the drawings, so that the flange O interlocks with the corresponding part of the inner portion of the member 13. Now in order to fasten the adjacent edges of the sheet A in place I move the memher 0 longitudinally to pass the flange 0 lengthwise into the slot B to interlock the two members B and C, it being understood that the springy nature of the sheet metal draws the member 0 into the proper position after the flange O is engaged at its lower end with the top end of the slot B.
It will be seen that by the arrangement described the two adjacent edges of the sheet A are firmly united with each other, and the seam formed by the two members B and O is on the outside of the sheet metal, so that the said seam is not affected by the heat passing through the pipe.
It is understood that in manufacturing the pipe is provided only at its lower end with the interlocking arrangement described.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A sheet-metal article having two edges, one of said edges being bent outwardly upon the main portion and thence forwardly upon itself to form a pocket running longitudinally with the edge, the portion of said edge which lies against the main portion of the article being longitudinally slotted at one end and the remaining edge of the article being cut to form a tongue which is bent inwardly parallel with the said remaining edge, said remaining edge of the article being capable of passing into the pocket of the first edge and the tongue of said remaining edge being capable of fitting in the slot of the first edge, substantially as described.
GUSTAVUS F. BAUMAN.
