JOHN F. HAY, 0F ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO MALLEABLE IRON COMPANY, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION 0F PENNSYLVANIA.
STOVE-TOP.
Leccese.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 29, 1913.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JOHN F. HAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stove-Tops, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to stove tops and consists in certain improvements in the construction thereof as will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims.
The invention is more particularly directed to stove tops formed of cast material and particularly malleable castings. Where this material is used the shrinkage is so irregular that stove tops cannot be made with the desired accuracy without forming the top in different parts and machining these parts so as to correctthe irregularities incident to variations in shrinkage. In forming stove tops, the opening for the stove pipe in the rear part of the top is ordinarily located at the center of said part and in order to bring this opening to such center part, it is necessary to machine or cut both ends of the rear part or supply a separate part carrying the stove pipe opening which may be adjusted.
Another feature contemplated in this construction is the flanged edge of the top. These tops are provided with a flange along the outer edge, the purpose of the flange being to finish the top and to strengthen the exposed edge.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings as follows Figure 1 shows a plan view of the stove top. Fig. 2 an enlarged view of a fragment of a corner on the line 2 2 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 a section on the line 3 3 in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 a section on the line 4 4 in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 a section on the line 5 5 in Fig. 1. Fig. 6 a section on the line 6 6 in Fig. 1.
l marks the front part of the top, 2 the rear part, 3 the pipe opening and 4 the sides. The front part 1 has the ends 5, said ends being unobstructed so as to permit of machining or cutting to length. Lips 7 extend from the sides 4 under the front part 1 and these lips are secured to the front part by rivets 8, shoulders 9 being formed between the lips and the tops of the sides against which the ends of the front part 1 abut. All the parts of the stove have a flange on the outer edge and the flange construction is carried around the front end of the stove, thus finishing this end. The part 2 has the ends 10 which are unobstructed so as to permit of the machining or cutting of said ends to bring the part to length and to bring the ends to equal distances from the opening 3. Lips 11 extend from the sides of the side parts 4 adjacent to the ends thereof under the ends of the part 2. Rivets 12 are used for securing said lips to the rear part. Shoulders 13 are formed between the lips and the top of the sides 4 against which the ends of the part 2 abut. The rear edge of the part 2 is provided with a downwardly extending flange. It will be observed that this structure makes a continuous flange around the entire stove top with the exception of t-he ends of the sides 4. At the same time, all the surface dimensions of the top may be controlled by cutting or machining the front, rear and sides.
An insert 15 is arranged in the ends of the sides 4 completing the rear flange ofthe stove. The insert has the lip 16 which is secured to the flange at the rear of the part 2 by rivets 17. It has the lip 18 extending under the side which is secured to said side by a rivet 19, and in this way the insert not only completes the flange but assists in securing the parts together.
Ihat I claim as new is 1. In a stove top, the combination of a rear part flanged along its rear edge and having a centrally located pipe opening and plain ends; side parts against which the ends of the rear part abut, said side parts having flanges on their outer edges and having plain rear ends cut flush with the rear edge of the rear part; and an insert at the rear ends of the side parts completing the rear flange said insert being secured to one of said parts.
2. In a stove top, the combination of a rear part flanged along its rear edge and having a centrally located pipe opening and plain ends; side parts against which the ends of the rear part abut, said side parts having flanges on their outer edges and having plain rear ends cut flush with the rear edge of the rear part; an insert at the rear ends of the side parts completing the rear flange; and lips on said insert extending along the side and rear parts for securing the insert to said parts.
3. In a stove top, the combination of a CIK In testimony whereof I have hereunto set first part and a second part joined to forrn my hand in the presence of two subscribing 10 a corner of the top, both of said parts hztving' plain ends and flanges along their outer Witnesses.
edges the end of the first part abuttinof the side di the second part; and an insert att the JOHN F HAY' end of the second part completing the flange Witnesses:
aiongthe outer edges of said parte, said in- V. C. Hess,
sert being secured to one of said parts. B. M. HARTMAN.
