Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
-ANDREW TAYLOR AND JAMES QUINN, OF PORTLAND, MAINE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOILER-LEGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,355, dated August 25, 1874; application filed June 5,1874.
To all whom it may concern Beit known that we, ANDREW TAYLOR and JAMES QUINN, of Portland, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented l certain new and useful Improvements in Boiler- Legs; and we do hereby declare that the following is a'full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which itpertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.4
Figure 1 is an end view of a boiler with our improvements attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a back view of the supplemental piece shown in position in Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a side view in section ofthe same.
Same letters show like parts. The object of our invention is to produce a supplemental piece or device to be attached to the lower side of the front of a boiler, the purpose of which will be hereinafter described. Heretofore the front of the boiler has been composed of a single piece or pieces of metal riveted together, the said pieces, when so bolted, being of ,such 'shape as to form the head of thel boiler. The great difeulty'existing when the boiler-head was thus constructed was that the projecting parts forming the front of the legs would soon become so worn as to cause either the entire, headwto be removed and a new one supplied, or to require a patch or piece of metal to be riveted over these projecting parts in order to give proper This` not only caused large eX- pense, but gave the head of the boiler an unfinished and rough appearance. Moreover, the result wasvery unsatisfactory. Another trouble existed, in that if the projecting parts of the head that form the front of the boiler-legs should not exactly fit the spaces inv tended for them, it would be almost impossible to bring them into their proper places, and
-secured to the front of the boiler.
asmuch as We provide supplemental pieces a to take the place of these projecting parts of the boiler-head. These pieces are of thicker metal than the other parts of the boiler-head, and will, in consequence, stand longer wear. It is important that they should be of heavier material, for the reason that, as has before been intimated, they are obliged to stand much more wear by being nearer the floor of the fire-room and subjected to the action of the implements used for supplying the furnace with fuel, 85e. These pieces a are made with a projecting lip or ange, b, shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and extend nearly, but not quite, along the entire length of the piece a., and are of such dimensions as to t the space between the lower edge of the front of the boiler-head and the bottom ofthe outer pieces of the boiler, where theyare bent so as to form the legs ofthe same. The head is first The pieces a, with their lian ges b, are then applied to the legs, and form the front of the same, as before described. The part c of the piece a overlaps the outside edge of the lower part of the boilerhead, as shown in Fig. l, and is riveted thereto. This piece a is otherwise secured by bolts or rivets passing through the iiange b on each side, and into the outer part d of the boilerleg. If these pieces should become worn out before the other parts of the head, they can be easily removed and new vones supplied.
What we claim as our invention,'and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with a boiler-leg. of the piece a, having the flange b and overlap c, when .applied iu the manner and for the purposes herein 4set forth. Y
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we afx our signatures in presence of two witnesses. A
ANDREW TAYLOR. JAMES QUINN. Witnesses:
WM. HENRY CLIFFORD, FRANK H. J oRDAN.
