NrrED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT S. NEWBY, OF GHAMPAIGN, ILLINOIS.
STOVE-BACK LINING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 246,630, dated Sepember 6, 1881.
Application tiled April 21, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom #may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT S. NEWBY, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Champaign, in the county of Champaign and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and uscful Improvements in Stove-Back Linin gs 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, whichform a part of this specication, and in which- I Figure 1 is a rear elevation; Fig. 2, a crosssection on the line x Fig. l, and Fig. 3, a detail vertical longitudinal section.
The object of my invention is to produce a simple stove-back lining which can be readily applied to cooking-stoves having fire-pots of different heights and widths or lengths, and nicely tittedin the same; and to this end the invention consists in novel features ofconstruction and combination and arrangement ofparts, all as will be hereinafter' fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, A represents the main body ofthe lining, and B B adjustable and removable side or end wings for regulating the length or width of the lining. The bottom edge of the main body A and wings B B are cast with longitudinal corrugations or breaking-grooves a b for diminishing the height of the lining and their top edges, with outwardlyprojecting flanges a b for fitting over the top edge of the frame ot' the stove.
The central portion of the main body A of the lining is provided with a depression or cavity, C, decreasing' in depth toward the bottom ot' the lining, and forming an interior sloping wall, c. This depression or cavity C is provided with longitudinal strengtheningribs c of, connected by vertical ribs c2 c2. The spaces between the longitudinal ribs c c form guides or ways for the right-angled projections d d of the inwardly-projecting ends D D of the adjustable and removable win gs B B.
The Wings B B are provided with a series of adjusting-holes, ce, through which and through holes fj' in the main body A pass bolts E E for adjustably securing the side wings, B B, to the body A of the lining, said bolts being secured in position and the parts tightly clamped together by the nuts g y.
The whole lining, it will be seen, is well adapted for application to all sizes of cookingstoves, is simple and cheap in construction, and requires no exact fitting ot' parts to make it useful.
I am aware that a stove-back lining having adjustable and removable side or end wings is old, and such I do not wish to be understood as claiming, broadly, as of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a back-lining for stoves, the main body A, having the central depression or cavity, C, forming sloping wall c, and the longitudinal and vertical strengthening-ribs c c c2 c2, in combination with the adjustable side wings, B B, having inwardly-projecting ends D D, provided with right-angled projections d d, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
2. The herein-described stove-back lining for stoves, composed ofthe main body A, having holes ff, central depression or cavity, C, with strengthening-ribs c c2 and the breaking-grooves c', and of the adjustable and removable wings B B, having the inwardly-projecting' ends D D, with the projections d, the series of adjusting-holes c, and the securing bolts and nuts, as specified.
In testimony whereof I aftix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT S. NEWBY.
