Description

E. E. BUNKER.
Stove-Back.
No. 221513. Patented Nov. 11, I879.
Ine/amr: @Leow Y@ @www www N- PEfERS. PHoTu LITHOGRA wAsHxNGwN D c UNITED STATES `PATENT OFFICEo EDGAR E. BUNKER, OF DUBUQUE, IOWA.
IM PROVEM ENT IN STOVE- BAC KS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent Nolv 221,513, dated November 11, 1879; application tiled September :27, 1879.
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, EDGAR E. BUNKER, of Dubuque, in the county of Dubuque and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stove-Backs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the let- Jters of reference marked thereon.
The object I have in view is to produce a simple adjustable stove-back lining for iirepots, which can be readily applied to cookingstoves with fire-pots of different heights and lengths, and can be nicely fitted in the same, whether or not the stove is provided with a central post to support the top plate.
My invention therein consists, first, in providing each of the adjustable wings of the stove-back with a slot commencing near one edge and a bolt-hole near the other edge, thus making the wings reversible and exchange-y able, and allowing others to be added; second, in providing the stove-back, at its upper rearwardly-turned edge, with a central thin portion, which can be broken out to avoid the central top-support `when the stove-back is fitted to a stove having such a support; third, in the peculiar construction and manner of attaching a vertical wing to the lower edge of the body of the stove-back; and, further, in the combination, construction, and arrangein'ent of the parts composing my stove-back, all as fully hereinafter explained.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the'rear side of the stove-back; Fig. 2, a front elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 a vertical central section on line 3 .3.
Like letters denote corresponding parts.
A is the body of the stove-back, cast with vertical corrugations, and having the usual rearwardly-curved tippe-red geex'tendin g partly over the oven. On the rear side, at this upper edge, a central depression, B, is cast, making the plate much thinner at that point. This depression is a little larger than the central support, extendingfin some stoves from the front of the oven to the top plate ot' stove, and is intended to be broken out to avoid this support, permitting a close fit of the stove-back to the iirepot.
The body A is provided with side or end ex tensions, C, cast smooth and made thinner than the body. These extensions are even with the central portion of the stove-back on its front face, but on its rear side are depressed below the surface of such central portion, form ing shoulders a at their junction therewith The adjustable side or end wings, D, slide on these depressed surfaces, and are flush with the surface of the body of the stove-back. By these means a nicer tit can be made with the tire-pot than if the Wings projected rearwardly beyond the body of the stove-back.
The adjustable wings D are attached to the end extensions, C, by two bolts, b, passing through slots c in the extensions and slots d in the wings. The nuts are turned on the boltson the rear side of the stove-back.
By having slots in both the extensions and the wings a greater adjustment is obtained with a less weakening of the parts, and the wings will be better held by having the bolts pass as nearly through their centers as possi ble with the extension desired.
The wings D are shown as made of different widths, it being intended to make the wings of two or more widths, and to ilse in fitting each stove the wings most desirable.
Each wing is provided, in addition to the slot d, with a bolt-hole, e, near its other edge, whereby the wings are made exchangeable or reversible from one end to the other of the stove-back; and, if found necessary, the stoveback can be lengthened by adding other wings onto the first and securing the additional wings by bolts passed through the holes e.
The bottom edge of the whole stove-back,
- including the wings, is provided with one or more' breaking-grooves, f, by which the height of the stove-back can be diminished.
To the lower edge of the stove-back, on its rear side, is adjustably attached a bottom wing, E, extending the entire length of the stove-back, and having a number of breakingoff grooves, g, at each end. rlhis wing E has a central slotted tongue, E', extending upwardly therefrom, and a bolt, h, passing through the slot of this tongue and through a-hole in the stoveback-adjustably secures the wing to the stoveback. By means of this bottom wing the stove-backs can be neatly fitted to tire-pots of different heights.
The Whole stove-back, it will be seen, is well adapted for application to all sizes of cookingstoves, is simple and cheap in construction, and requires no exact fitting of the parts together to make it useful.
What I claim as my invention, :1nd desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a stove-back, the adjustable und removable wings D, having;r slots l and holes c, substantially as described and shown.
2. In a stove-back, the depressed and thin portion B at the edge of the rem'Wardly-turued upper end of the stove-back, substantially as described and shown.
