J. CHRISTIAN.
THRASHING' TOOTH.
No. 308,136. Patented Nov. 18, 1884.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
JOHN CHRISTIAN, OF SAN J OSE, CALIFORNIA.
Tl- IRASHlNG-TOO TH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 308,136, dated November 18, 1884.
Application filed January 14, 1884. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN CHRISTIAN, of San J os, county of Santa Clara, and State of California, have invented an Improvement in Thrashing-Teeth; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to certain improvements in the construction of the teeth used in the cylinders of thrashing-machines; and it consists in a novel formation of the teeth to strengthen them in the direction of greatest strain, and to present the thickest portion in the direction toward which the teeth are moving, substantially as hereinafter described, and set forth in the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention, Figure l is a View of a tooth of my construction. Fig. 2 is across-section of a tooth. Fig. 3 is a rear View of the tooth. Fig. 4 is a side view of the tooth.
In the ordinary construction of thrashingcylinder teeth they are made broader at the outer end than at the point next the cylinder, where they are secured, when viewed from the side, and they are made narrower at the outer than the inner end when viewed fromthe front or rear; but their thickness is the same at the rear as at the front edge. In myinvention the side view of the tooth Apresent-s a similar appearance, it being broader at (6 than at b, and itis also narrower, when viewed edgewise, at a than at b. .I also make the tooth thinner at the rear than at the front edge, as shown in the cross'section of the tooth, Fig. 2. This presents a broad front edge to act upon the straw and do the work, and by narrowing the tooth from front to rear the friction is much reduced and it runs with less power. The screw-shank 0 passes through the cylinder-bar D, and is secured by a nut, E, in the usual manner.
In order to strengthen the tooth at the base where it abuts upon the cylinder-bar, I form a projecting lug, G, which extends outward from the rear, so as to rest upon the cylinderbar, thus giving a broader base and greater strength in the direction of the strain to resist breakage.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the perforated bar D, of a thrashing-tooth formed with a body made thinner at the rear edge than at the front, a lug at the rear, forming an extended base for the tooth upon the bar, and a shank fitting into the perforations in the bar, and means for drawing the tooth tightly and firmly against the bar, substantially as herein set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set .my hand.
v JOHN CHRISTIAN.
