Description

C. D. WOODRUFF.
STOVE-LEG.
No.176,394. Patented April 18, 1876.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIcE.
OHAUNDEY D. WOODRUFF, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN STOVE-LEGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,394, dated April 18, 1876; application filed February 24, 1876.
To all whom it may con'cem Be it known that I, OHAUNOEY D. WOOD- RUFF, of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove-Legs;
and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a stoveleg secured in place by my improved fastening, and Fig. 2 is a like view of said leg and curing stove-legs in position; but, in eonse-.
quence of increased expense or difficulties ex: perieneed in. the construction or use of such fastenings, none have gone into general use,
' and the stoves sold have only the ordinary means for the attachment of their legs or feet.
To obviate this difficulty is the design of myinvention, which consists in combining with the usual dovetail engaging-arm of a stove-leg a setscrew, which passes inward through one wall of the recess that contains said arm, and engages with a notch, which is prepared within the contiguous edge of the latter, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
In the annexed drawing, A represents a stove-leg,'which, at its upper end, is provided with a horizontal arm, A, that has the usual wedge form in plan view and dovetail form in cross-section. The arm A fits into a correspond-inglyshaped recess, B,-that is formed upon the lower side of the base-plate O of a stove by means of two lugs or bars, b and 11, cast or otherwise secured thereon, said arm and recess being the means most commonly employed for attaching a leg to a stove.
It will be seen that by moving the arm A inward to a sufficient distance it'will be caused to fill the recess B, and that by then driving said arm it may be wedged in place with greater or less firmness; but experience has shown that the jar of a stove occasioned by use will cause its legs to become loosened unless held in position by other means than those described.
To secure the desired result I increase the vertical dimensions of one of the lugs b, and within said lug provide a threaded opening, which receives and contains a set-screw, D, that has an inward and upward inclination, so as to cause its inner end to bear against the contiguous edge of the arm A, at which point a recess, a, is formed within said arm, which recess has a rearward and, in a slight degree, a laterallyoutward inclination, as seen in Fig. 2, so as to bring its face nearly parallel to the line horizontally of the opposite edge of said arm.
If, now, the set-screw D be turned inward, its impinging end will bear upon the face of the recess a, and, pressing the rear arm A against the opposite side of the recess B, hold said arm firmly in place, and prevent accidental displacement.
If desired, additional security of attachment of the leg may be secured by making the edge of the arm A opposite to the setscrew D concave horizontally, and giving to the contiguous edge of the recess B a corresponding convex form, in which event, while the front portion of said arm should closely fill said recess, its rear end should have some little lateral play.
It will be seen that the set-screw not only presses the leg-arm firmly against the opposite side of its recess, but also operates to hold said arm with equal firmness against the lower side of the base-plate, and thereby prevent all movement of said parts.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new 1s- In combination with the arm A, constructed as shown, and provided with the recess a, the set screw D, passing inward and upward through the lug b of the recess B, and engaging with said reces's a, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 10th day of February, 1876.
O. D. WOODRUFF.
Witnesses M. O. WAGGONER, JAMES DRIscoLL.
