Description

2Sheets--Sheet2.' J. SCHWEINFURT. Improvement in Fastenings for Drawers.
N0. 132 0 8. V Patented 0m. 8, 1872.
F'ICZMH c FIGR WITNESSE s. INVENT'OB UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB SUHWEINFURT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FASTENiNGS FOR DRAWERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,028, dated October 8, 1872.
' of the city of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Looks for Drawers, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to a rod which passes through the frame containing one or more drawers, from front to back, and a bar at the back of the frame arranged at right angles to the line of motion of the drawers, the rod having 011 its rear end an eccentric which connects with a slot on the bar, so constructed that as the rod is turned by means of a key in one direction the eccentric moves the bar to unlock the drawers, and, when turned in the opposite direction, to lock them, the bar being connected with the backs of the drawers by means of slots, which have an enlargement at one end which surrounds the head of screws that project from the backs of the tion. Figs. 2 and 3 are side and end views of the rod 0, having on one end the eccentric D. Figs. 4 and 5 are a face and edge view of the reciprocating bar E. Figs. 6 and 7, Sheet No. 2, are rear views of the case of drawers, with the back 9 removed to exhibit the lockin g device.
Like letters in all the figures indicate the same parts.
A is a case containing two drawers, B B. O is a rod which passes through the piece a. of
' the case having in its front end a socket, b,
for the reception of a key, and on its rear end an eccentric, D, as seen in detail in F1gs.2 and 3, which works in the slot .00 of the bar E, seen in detail in Figs. 4 and 5. It is held at its upper end in the slot 0 of the piece a by means of the cross-bar F, and against the bottom strip 01 of the case A by means of the screw 6, which passes through the slot f, as seen in Figs. 6 and 7, the back g of the case A being removed to exhibit the locking dev ce. The said bar is provided with slots h, wh ch play over the shanks of screws H which project from the backs i of the drawers B. The slots are, at one end, of the size of the screws, and at the other end larger than the heads of the same, so that, when the eccentric D is in the position represented in Fig. 6, the. small part of the slots being around the stem of the screws, and the head of the latter bein g against the rear slide of the bar E, asseen in Fig. 6, the drawers are locked in position. As the rod 0 is turned one-half around, the eccentric D moves the bar E far enough to bring the enlargement of the slots h over the head of the screw H, so as to admit of the drawers B being withdrawn.
I have shown but two drawers in the case A, yet it will be seen that the device is adapted to any number of drawers.
The key-socket b may be of any form which will prevent the key turning in it; and, if desired, the socket may bein the key instead of in the end of the rod 0. Other variations may also be made in the details of the device without departing from the character of the invention.
I claim as my invention The combination of the rod G provided with an eccentric, D, and the reciprocating bar E, constructed substantially as described, with the case A and drawers B, as and for the purpose set forth.
